Before Catholic Answers, starting in 1968 Catholics United for the Faith was a highly productive ministry to unify Catholic laity and advance the teachings of the Catholic Faith. Through a network of local chapters, publication of religious textbooks and other communications, they nurtured study of the Faith, and advocacy against abuses, both within the Church and from outside. CUF managed to walk the delicate balance, avoiding the pitfalls of modernism on the one hand, and disrespect for lawful Church authority on the other hand.
CUF never lapsed in terms of fidelity, but the organization and most chapters essentially inactivated starting around 2000, for reasons that are unclear. Now it has been linked with the St. Joseph Foundation (canon law advocacy), and the new president, Phillip C. L. Gray, is trying to rebuild CUF. The decline of CUF created a vacuum in which some Catholic ministries disappeared, some became subservient to the secular culture, and new ones arose, claiming to be orthodox but locked into an adversarial position towards the current magisterium.
