There are about 1,100,000 lawyers in the U.S. Obviously, it is a very attractive occupation. This is something the Vatican needs to study. Never mind obsession with problems of sex. Our pressing problem is lack of spiritual care. What makes law so desirable while the priesthood is shunned? Let’s not blame God for shortage of vocations. Those really responsible are those who make the rules of church discipline

so you think the pope should make the priesthood a high-paying job with the opportunity to make millions in class-action lawsuits?

I don’t think that law and the priesthood are really comparable. One is a vocation. The other is more of a career.

Take me for example. I’m in law school. Assuming I pass the bar next July, I’ll be a lawyer. Fine. That’ll be my career. I’m not committing my life to it though. I might not be an attorney forever. I consider it a career, not a vocation. My vocation is being a husband and father. That’s not something that I can change my mind about after a few years.

What’s he gonna buy? Designer cassocks? Or are we turning into Evangelicals with our ministers wearing rolexes and driving mercedes?

One is a vocation and the other is licensed thievery.

Look at the dollar bill in your purse or wallet. Doesn’t it say “IN GOD WE TRUST”? Most people say it means that the people trust in God. Sadly, it really means that we trust in the dollar as our god. Look at the celebration of Christ’s birthday. $$$$$$$$$$$ is what it is all about. So sad. :tsktsk:

Not in my house!
We celebrate Jesus’ birthday and have Jesus Birthday presents.

The hand that rocks the cradle is the hand that rules the world. We mothers can change what society has destroyed.

I concur, though I hope you still give a little something to your kids, even if its a prayer book (which my parents got for my birthday, love the breviary!)

God bestowed on me a special gift. To raise Catholic children.
In return He gave me wonderful clay to work with.
The least I can do is come through for Him!

What does the secularization of Christmas have to do with the difference between law and the priesthood?

Also, it’s not fair to make a general statement that a career in law is “licensed thievery.” There are many different kinds of lawyers.

One of my best friends is an attorney. He handles cases that involve social security, worker’s comp. and medical malpractice type situations. He is the most honest person I know, sometimes waiving his fee because he feels the “victim” deserves the full amount. He lives in an apartment and drives a Toyota Corolla (as opposed to living in a beautiful home and driving a Lexus). He could easily work for a firm where he could make double what he makes already, but he doesn’t. He wants to be able to sleep at night knowing he’s cheated no one.

To say that being an attorney gives one a license to steal is a rather sweeping statement and one of ignorance, not all attorney’s are like that. Turn off the television and pick up a book instead. 😉

It sounds like your blowing things out of proportion and just wanting to rant. Yes, Christmas has turned into a spending spree, a lot of people even going into debt because of it, but a good christian will always know the true meaning of Christmas. Yes, sadly we go over board during the holiday’s, but during that time while I have a beautiful tree up and several decadently wrapped gifts under it I also have naitivity scenes all over my home and keep in mind the true reason for the season.

Once again, your sweeping statements are uncalled for in my opinion and this one is especially off topic for this thread.
