I wonder the same thing. Why can’t anyone–especially those who practice it-- see through it?

I think the worst part is knowing that the Mormon faith seems to act as a bridge between the parody religions of today and the authentic religions of yesterday.

Eternally Yours, Blade and Blood

Careful, Dawkins treats all religions this way. He is a blatant Anti-theist who would like nothing more than to see all religion razed off the face of the Earth. His lack of wisdom astounds me…

I feel like you do! I do not know why they can’t see the truth! It’s scary that you could lose yourself in something like this. That’s why it is good to have complete Faith and Wisdom of Faith. Pray for them! I will too! The devil is sure showing himself in the last 2 centuries!
God Bless!

Dawkins is awesome.

The man sees any belief in a god as a mental disorder…you call that awesome?
I call it blindsighted and ignorant. He is a poor philosopher.

Blade and Blood,

I have an exercise for you. Imagine yourself born a Mormon, raised a Mormon, in Utah. You live in a Mormon family, within a Mormon community. You are not allowed to ask questions or question your religious leaders. The police are faithful Mormons, and they will stop at nothing to stop you from leaving the Church of Latter-Day saints. If you do decide to leave Mormonism, however, you’ll be immediately booted out of Utah, left in the desert, with nothing but the shirt on your back. You don’t know about anything outside of Utah, becuase you’ve never been taught about anything outside of Utah. Given this situation, tell me, would you leave Mormonism, let alone be able to see through it? And as you ponder your answer, please remember that the situation I described above is the actual situation which Mormons find themsleves in in Utah.

I read and own The God Delusion. It was very good, in my opinion. The reason why Judeo-Christianity (along with Islam) are main targets because, to Dawkins and other hardcore Atheists, they are the “main problem”.

Mental Disorder… he kind of hits the nail on the head, though. To be fair, if you claimed a voice was speaking to you, whether you claim it’s God or someone else, it really is schizophrenia (sorry if I mispelled that :o).

The “Imaginary Friend” bit was hilarious! And it definitely made a lot of sense. :yup:

They are the main problem because of the attack on science here in the USA (creationism and Intelligent Design) and because of fundamentalist (radical) Islam’s attacks through terrorism all over the western world.

It’s all fundamentalism against rational enlightened thought.

Ah, yes, and I was well-aware of it as I typed my thread. I have many classmates on this end who become rather emotional with their faith.

And to answer your hypothetical question: I would hope that I would make it through and find help. If I was smart enough to realize I should leave, then I have confidence in saying that I’d have enough sense to trust my own judgments and be able to identify what I should or shouldn’t believe, especially considering I felt the LDS faith was wrong, there is another way. Maybe I’d take it slow and go from Mormon to Protestant to Catholic to Agnostic and so on. The possibilities are endless!

Dawkins is an arrogant fool. He is so incredibly bigoted that I cannot take anything he says seriously. Not the mention that as a zoologist, he has no business claiming to be an expert philosopher and theologian. He is on record stating that he considers theology to be a nonsubject, meaning he has no knowledge of it. That tells me that all he does in The God Delusion is build up a giant strawman, attaches religious names to it, and then knocks it down. That alone has prevented me from reading his book. If he had knowledge about theology, then I would give him some credit, but as he doesn’t, all he presents is misrepresented nonsense that gives atheists a bad name. I hope not all atheists are like that.

…So you didn’t read the book? :ehh:

No, Atheists differ from person to person.

Interesting story.

Of course, the majority of Mormons live outside the USA, never mind just 'outside Utah." More American Mormons live outside Utah than in. Not to mention the fact that far from never being allowed to leave Utah, we boot our young men and a lot of our young women not only out of Utah, but out of their nation and their comfort zones to go to many other, far places. Utah is one of the few states in the USA where Americans can truly be called bilingual; more foreign languages spoken in Utah, per capita, than almost anywhere else in the USA.

Better education, too. More college graduates than most places.

So while your characterization is imaginative, it’s not exactly accurate.

But then, sir, you seldom are.

Dawkins is awesome.
So you agree with Dawkins and his “religion of random chance”?

Look at the inexplicably beautiful world around you. Look at someone you love, look at your cat or your dog or a flower or a blade of grass or smell a rose or take a breath of fresh air.

This infinite, unique and perfectly ordered world that we live in follows an incredibly complex sets of rules.

You are obviously very intelligent and are open-minded, searching for the Truth, as we all are!

IS THERE A GOD? That’s the one question we all must answer sooner or later.

Have you read the book by Dr Francis Collins, the MD, PHD geneticist noted for his landmark discovery of disease genes and the his leadership as the head of the Federal Government’s Human Genome Project?

He lead the the team of scientists that in 2000, broke the 3 billion letter cryptographic code, the Human Genome, in each individual human cell. This Human Genome, these 3 billion letters, arranged in unique sequences of 4 letter codes in each cell, has allowed researchers around the globe to begin work on the process of understanding the connection between genes and disease.

In his 2006 book, The Language of God, a Scientists Presents Evidence For Belief, Dr Collins, initially an atheist, explains his journey of scientific discovery. He reluctantly became an agnostic and finally a Christian, once confronted with his parents deaths and his discoveries of the incredibly complex and ordered Human Genome in each human cell.

“During a debate with Richard Dawkins, Collins stated that God is the explanation of those features of the universe that science finds difficult to explain (such as the values of certain physical constants favoring life), and that God himself does not need an explanation since he is beyond the universe.”

Think about that. Do you believe Dawkins’ “religion of Chance”, that we exist as a result of a random, unexplainable, **** shoot, that resulted in the Universe, the stars, planets, the Earth, and all of its’ beautiful life?

This is not about religion, or my opinion or Dawkins’s opinion, it is about the Truth.

**Think about it, 3 billion, yes BILLION, unique letters in each cells’ code, randomly organized in 4 letter groups. The 3 billion unique letter codes are for one cell in a human being. Each Human being has at least 10 trillion individual cells (some scientists estimate 50 trillion cells), all working together, in harmony to sustain life.
**
Now according to DAWKINS’ “RELIGION OF RANDOM CHANCE”, all of this, the 3 billion letter codes in each of the 10-50 trillion unique cells in each human being ia a random chance?

Then add in everything else in the known universe. All of the flowers, birds, dogs, cats, water, the earth, the moon, the stars, all of these are a result of random chance?

Even if that were true, where did the first elements, atoms, subatomic particles, whatevers…? that make up the infinite univese come from?

So an initial random chance resulted in other infinite random chances that all work perfectly well in a coded 3 billion by 10 trillion scenario??

I don’t know the answer, but I do know that believing in God, or the Creator, or whatever you want to call the first cause, is a lot more sane than believing in the “religion of random chance”!

Don’t fall for the slick sales pitch, make up your own mind.

No, I did not. I have better things to do with my time then read blatant hatred.

Of course, I’ve seen the magnificent masterpiece around me. Reality is beautiful.

There are Mormons who are like this, just they live on compounds, practice polygamy, marry children, and boot out the male competition and other assorted “problem” people.

These groups are splinters of mainstream Mormonism. Mainstream Mormonism is still cliquish and clannish and they differentiate between Mormon and non-Mormon, in various ways. And yeah, living in UT we fondly refer to it as “behind the Mormon curtain”. There is truth in all jest, but UT isn’t a large compound that is isolated from the world.

I don’t believe you. There are plenty of non-Mormons in Utah, and there are plenty of ex-Mormons everywhere.

I know what you mean. I was just telling my husband that I feel sorry for the polygamist. They do not know any better what so ever! That is all they knew and that’s all their children know. I think the LDS should have offered them some kind of counseling after they changed the rule to no polygamy. Those are the people I feel most sorry for! They have to be scared when raids happen. It is so sad what this man Joseph Smith has started. But there are people who will just not see the truth at all, even it you put it right in front of them, they have so much pride. That’s so scary to me because I hope I never get to a weak point in my life and become succumb to that. I pray to God he keeps me firm in my faith! Everyone hits a low sometime or another in their life, and that’s usually when the devil will come in sheep’s clothing . That is what happened to my husbands family, his mom had just walked out of on the family (his dad his 2 sisters and him), his house had just burnt to the ground, and they were very poor because of it, but the LDS church still wanted tithes from them. I can’t imagine them still asking for that! Another example is Glen Beck (from fox news), he said he was at the lowest point of his life and met his wife and she made them pick a religion before she would marry him and they picked Mormonism. He went on to say that he felt so happy at the church that if they would have asked him to go to the basement and drink kool-aid, he would of.(you tube has the interview with him about this) Now that’s scary. All we can do is keep on praying and asking the Holy Spirit to enter their hearts!
