Richard Dawkins' "The God Delusion" reviewed

I’ve written a review of Dawkins’ new book.

Any comments welcome. A review is the place to give a summary of the book, not to enage with it seriously or present your own views at length. I’m planning a more elaborate refutation later, so I’d be grateful for ideas on material to include.

This book was a long time coming. After writing *The Selfish Gene *Dawkins was approached by many sympathetic clergymen who saw an analogy to Original Sin. Something seems to have soured. Dawkins has become more militantly atheist. The God Delusion finally states his position, “If this book works as I intend, religious readers who open it will be atheists when they put it down”.

Well, as a former Atheist-turned-Catholic, I guess I must answer this challenge! Perhaps Dawkins will send me a free copy

Thanks for the review! I hope to read the book myself. I know that I’ve typically found Dawkin’s arguments to be philosophically weak, which is simply the rule for the paradigm he’s adopted. Hopefully this book will rise above the assumption that empiricist materialism is “the way” and actually go some distance of proving it. I doubt that, given the book is about God and not about defending Dawkins’ assumptions, but since much of his attacks on belief rest on those assumptions it’s something that needs to be tightened up, IMO.

Of course, I’ve no doubt that materialist empiricism CAN’T rise to such an occaision, but I can always hope for more interesting debate opponents
