Rick Santorum is getting so much hate

Well, this is very disheartening…Rick Santorum has announced he is running for president but I see so many comments on news sites that literally rebuke him! They claim that he is a homophobe, heartless for saying that women who conceived in rape should not have an abortion because a child is a gift from God, and they also say that he is a racist (super false). He is the only presidential candidate that will live up to Catholic values and will truly help our nation, as Obama sort of did the opposite. Why is he getting so much hate, is it because his ideas are deemed so "radical’? What do you guys think?
 
His message is only a part of it. Mike Huckabee is another outspoken Christian/social conservative, and he’s a lot more well-liked. The people who dislike Rick Santorum don’t like evangelical Christians either, generally. So I don’t think it’s denominational. I think it’s Rick’s communication style. He may be the nicest guy on earth, but he doesn’t convey his message well.

Or it may be the sweater vests. Okay, that’s a joke, but I’m not a fan of sweater vests.
 
I haven’t read any negative comments yet from either democrats or republicans. I am glad he is in the race though. There are a lot of things I like about Rick Santorum.

I was wondering why Bernie Sanders is running to oppose Hillary?

I’ve read a lot of negative comments about Rick. My recommendation: don’t read the comments to a Rick Santorum article. There’s a lot of vitriol; a lot of times, people forget to act decent when they’re behind a computer screen (or tablet screen for that matter. new era.) I do like Rick Santorum, though I do feel that maybe he’s not the right man, but he’s got the right message, what with his attempts to reach out to working Americans. A lot of candidates could take a page out of Rick Santorum’s book.
 
Santorum might make a good priest, but he’d be an awful president.
 
I have been fascinated by allegations of hate from those own behavior is hateful. Not agreeing with or pandering to anti-values could only be construed as hate since hatred is the wellspring of the negative emotions and vile comments.
The root of it I believe is that people hate those who make them look small or nasty by comparison. So they construct a defense of false values saying that they are the ones for equality and love. It is difficult to counter their arguments but not impossible. Equality and love should hurt no one but there are already victims in their utopian vision, children deprived of two biological parents being at the head of the list.

I don’t have time or space. To summarize: He’s all about social issues which have nothing to do with the function of government (ask Rand Paul). He ignores the fact that the US is not a Medieval theocracy but a democracy with a majority of its citizens being non-Catholics, many of whom have different values and morals on certain issues. He wants to impose his own views on them. I don’t disagree with his positions because I share his beliefs; but I would never use political power to impose my own beliefs on others. He would. I don’t want to debate this. You asked my opinion, and there it is.

Yep. I totally agree. He’d be better off spending his time doing the Christian/Catholic radio circuit like he has been.

I also don’t like Rick because he routinely voted to expand government when he was in the Senate. I don’t like it when Democrats or Republicans vote to expand government’s reach into our society and lives.
 
Bernie Sanders is running because Hillary isn’t progressive enough for a lot of people on the Left.
 
Gosh. I’m a big Huckabee fan and also like Santorum.

It’s tough; you got two guys dividing up an important support pillar.

The freaks, geeks and activists need a whipping boy to rouse their apathetic supporters: Rick’s their man. Hysteria always raises funds.
 
I agree with mamlukman. Santorum has his social issues stances and nothing else going for him. He’s an unelectable candidate; his only banner is the lost cause of “traditional family values”. I also got the hint that Santorum doesn’t have both oars in the water back in 2012 when he said women should not serve in the military (or at least they shouldn’t be in combat).

This kind of campaigning is not good. It focuses so much on “values” which can never be placated while abandoning what is really in the voters’ best interests. This is what pundit Thomas Frank pointed out in his 2004 book, What’s the Matter with Kansas?

Conversely, not focusing on social issues is how Kathleen Sebelius (yes, THAT Kathleen Sebelius) became the previous governor of Kansas.

After 2012, I became disillusioned with social conservatism. I find myself much more inclined towards libertarianism. Rand Paul is my first pick; he subscribes to the radical idea that other people are not the property of the government to be ordered around and micromanaged.

(Lol) just wondering what the legitimate negatives were that people are saying. You certainly have a right to your opinion! 🙂

Not progressive enough - :eek:!?

Bernie is 5 years older than Hillary.

I am glad there are so many republicans running and I agree with another poster that Rick Santorum will bring some good ideas to the race. Things will get interesting the closer we get to January!

The biggest issue I have with Santorum and Huckabee is that all they will do in the end is take away votes from Walker from Iowa, which will only help Jeb Bush. I’m not keen on Bush winning because I don’t know if the base will turn out for him.

What’s going to happen is either Santorum (same with Huckabee) wins Iowa, or he’s out. It’s that simple, I think. The question is, who will they take with them? Santorum did well in Iowa last time and articles have said they like Huckabee’s folksy demeanor. But most social conservatives will vote for Walker, because he’s a fresh face, has a story in turning WI around and can hit the beltway because he’s outside it.

I just don’t see his candidacy as accomplishing anything.

Walker, Carson and Cruz all have the same values and these gentlemen have stories and a fresh face. Like it or not, that’s important today.

So, I’m going to have to go with the person who has the values and has a chance to win the nomination and the general election.

I don’t know that much about Walker, but he appears to be a good candidate. Jeb Bush reminds me too much of John McCain.
He might talk the talk, but will he walk the walk.

He will never be elected POTUS. He has absolutely no chance. I’m glad he is running, but obviously he is listening to some bad advisors.

Where did you buy your crystal ball? Why would you be glad he is running if he has no chance of winning? :confused:

I think Jeb would walk the walk. He’s done it before with Terri Schiavo. I’m really impressed with how Jeb Bush bent over backwards trying to save Terri Schiavo. He could have just ignored the email that Terri’s parents sent to him; instead, he gave a personal response, and he did what he could to save Terri.
