Hey everyone, I’m back and have more questions (Shocker!)

Here goes:
  1. Why did Martin Luther take the 7 books from the bible? What’s in them that he didn’t like? What was going on in the Catholic church that spawned the reformation?
  2. How to Catholics answer to things like the crusades and the inquisition?
  3. What are mortal sins? I figure those are the really bad ones; but what about baby sins? What are they called? Is there a list somewhere?

  1. The Canon of the Bible was in dispute in the time of Christ (the Saducees accepted only the first five books.) The Masorites (“handers down”) developed stringent standards for the Jewish Bible around the 8th Century, and in the process rejected some later books – those the Catholics call the Deuterocanonical (“Second Law.”) The Protestants later accepted the Jewish Canon – probably because it wasn’t Catholic.
  2. The Crusades were an attempt to take back the Holy Land, the Inquisition to maintain the purity of the Church. Both were bloody (but not as bloody as Protestant sources claim, and not as bloody as, say English persecution of Catholics.) For the sins committed during those times, we must accept guilt.
  3. Sins which are not mortal are called venal sins.

These are too complex to be answered in a topic thread on any message board. You need to do some research into Catholic history.

The “baby” sins are called venial sins. They are ones that don’t violate God’s love to such an extent as to cut us off from it. There is no list of venial sins that I know of, but the mortal ones all have their base in the Seven Deadly Sins:

Pride is excessive belief in one’s own abilities, that interferes with the individual’s recognition of the grace of God. It has been called the sin from which all others arise. Pride is also known as Vanity.

Envy is the desire for others’ traits, status, abilities, or situation.

Gluttony is an inordinate desire to consume more than that which one requires.

Lust is an inordinate craving for the pleasures of the body.

Anger is manifested in the individual who spurns love and opts instead for fury. It is also known as Wrath.

Greed is the desire for material wealth or gain, ignoring the realm of the spiritual. It is also called Avarice or Covetousness.

Sloth is the avoidance of physical or spiritual work.

To my knowledge, Luther was not the one who took out the books of the Old Testement. Although he did add some words that are not found in the original Greek. “By Faith ALONE”. Alone was never in the original text. He also Ripped out and burned the books of Peter and James. Primarily because it contradicted his view of salvation by Faith alone.In my view the crusades and the inquisition were unfortunate, but you have to realize the Church’s motive. Attacks from Islam and widespread destruction from the protestants.Mortal sin are sins of GRAVE matter. The easiest way to explain the difference is that mortal sins are commited with full knowledge of the sin and are grave or serious in nature. Murder, theft, abortion, Lying that causes harm to others unpure sexual acts, etc. Others would be called venial sins. Those are sins that are not of a Grave matter. I hope this helps, if I didn’t touch on everything you wanted please reply.

Baby sins are called “venial” sins. It’s kind of like eating venison.

Wow…seems like almost everything I THOUGHT I knew about the Catholic church is wrong. Wow. It’s all starting to make sense to me now. Slowly but surely. You’ll ahve to forgive me, this is somewhat overwhelming right now. My head is swimming with all this…at this point I’m almost certain that the Holy Spirit is leading me to the Catholic church. Everything just seems to fit. Sorry I’m rambling. Got some praying to do
 
I understand that some of the books had verses that offended Martin Luther’s beliefs, but I don’t understand what is offensive about the book, Tobit. I read it for the first time recently and found it to be a wonderful story. I find it hard to believe that anyone would not like this particular book. Protestants are missing out. I also find it odd that Fundamentalist claim to be bible only christians when they do not even have the whole bible!
