LOL! Um, I must admit as well, when directing 3 choral ensemble Masses each weekend, plus the extras, I can get distracted and forget where I am, forget to bring them in, all at the same time I am clicking the slides for projection and watching for clues as to when to end especially at offertory. I think you know what I mean!the organist (sorry Pup)
No apology necessary.
I can read music, I just can’t translate what I read to my vocal chords, so I have to hear songs a few times too before I join in. Our Youth choir director has everyone practice when they introduce a new song which helps! I don’t always sing loudly, but I usually sing, unless I really hate the song. The recessional Sunday was Rain Down which I detest, so I stood. Our choir director twisted my arm and so now I sing in the choir. I can’t read music so I have him play a new hymn for me a couple of times and then I can sing. My voice isn’t bad, but it isn’t good. I like to sing although I will admit some of the modern composers (Marty Haugen and David Haas) are not very good.
And that song will be “Go Make a Difference.” LOL!You know what I dream of – the WHOLE congregation singing together - - then nobody’s voice would stick out, nobody would feel too shy to sing. I can dream, can’t I?![]()
Marty and David have been writing music since the 80s and still are; seasoned composers, not really modern. If they were not very good, they would not sell music for their publishers, who sell to churches for profit and be history.I like to sing although I will admit some of the modern composers (Marty Haugen and David Haas) are not very good.
Janet, in all due respect, you might just be in the wrong ministry. Music ministry members are there to lead the congregation in prayer through music, not stand in protest against a song they detest. Not everyone is going to like a particular song, but their responsibility is to sing it anyway when in ministry. “Rain Down” is a nice song, not a favorite of mine, but the people like it, so the choir sings it. If an EM hates the taste of the wine, should they refuse to offer it when assigned to do so to others? Just sayin…I can read music, I just can’t translate what I read to my vocal chords, so I have to hear songs a few times too before I join in.
