Right to properly celebrated liturgy

I have recently read that we as baptized members of the Church have a right to a correctly celebrated liturgy.

Just how far does this go?? At our parish the rubrics are all pretty much followed correctly. The only glaring exception is that the music director uses instrumental music during Lent. (Which I have called to his attention and the pastor’s to no avail) We have way too many EMHC, but I will never convince anyone that is true.

However, I feel cheated. The music is well performed, but, well, ICKY. Bad songs, no hymns, no chant, and we never sing all ther verses of anything. Heaven forbid we should sing one note longer than it takes Father to get to the altar! I quit choir because of the selections, and let the pastor know why. When we moved to our new church, the pastor eliminated the bells. We rarely have incense. My kid have never learned the confiteor because it has been use maybe 5 times in the past 11 years at this parish.

I would love to change parishes, but my husband likes other things about the parish and the quality of the liturgy is not as important to him as it is to me.

Yes, we have a right to properly celebrated Masses.

We have to notify our pastors, bishops, cardinals, and the pope.
We cannot just stop with the parish priest, especially if we know something is illicit.

On the matter of music, however, its personal preference. I agree that chant is gorgeous, but what is song in Mass is considered licit. Take it as your cross and offer it up.

There is no “right” to any music (good, bad or otherwise) because it is not required for a mass to be valid or “properly celebrated.”

In fact Redemptionis Sacramentum states we have a duty to excercise this right.

We have a right to assist at the Mass celebrated in line with the directives of the General Instruction of the Roman Missal and the directives of Remptoris Sacramentum. That’s what we have a right to. We do not have a right to assist at the Mass celebrated the way we prefer to have it celebrated.

Your celebrants have the right to choose certain options in how the Mass is celebrated. One of them is the form that the Penitential Rite will follow. Please be respectful of the priest-celebrants’ right to select which options he will follow when they are accorded him.
