Ringing in ears during prayer

I was wondering if anyone has ever experienced ringing in their ear or pressure changes in an ear during prayer? I have been experiencing a short ringing (just a couple seconds) in my ear sometimes during prayer, or occasionally when I am thinking something sinful (like an unkind thought). It will sometimes randomly occur when I am driving or in interactions with strangers but will stop after I say a Hail Mary or St. Michael prayer.

I didn’t want to ask my priest because it seems like a strange question (and they are so busy with serious matters) but google didn’t yield any results either. It occurs about once or twice per day, on average, happening for the last year or so. I was curious if anyone had heard of this before.

You should see an MD because there’s not only tinnitus but a whole host of other things that ringing in the ears could be.
 
Yes. It is mainly around times of prayer, fleeting just a few seconds. The times it happens, I almost feel like it is to get my attention, kind of like a spiritual tap on the shoulder. I guess it is a silly question. Thank you for your response.
 
No questions are silly.
But you should have it checked out. 'Are you lying down when this happens? Kneeling? Standing for long periods? All can factor in.
 
Do you tend to go to a quiet room when you pray?

Anytime I’m in a room with no background noise my tinnitus kicks in something awful, years of shooting ducks and clay pigeons without hearing protection coming back to bite me 😦

I am a housewife so I do a lot my payer during things like laundry and dishes. It occurs sometimes sitting, sometimes standing.
 
Mom of 4 children age 8 and under. There are no quiet rooms! I am 38, so maybe age sneaking up on me. I got bursitis in my knee a couple month ago from kneeling at church to say the rosary. Old age is coming!

This is no joke. I’ve had tinnitus since I was a child, and it has been pretty consistent. Until about a month ago… and it has gotten 50% louder. I’ve got an appointment to see my doctor, I’m hoping that there is something they can do with it.

When it’s quiet around me the noise just drives me batty.
 
Spend much time at loud concerts or anything else that could have damaged your hearing in your younger years?
 
I’ve never gone to a doctor for it, I do know that dehydration can be a factor, but it’s basically constant for me if there’s not background noise. I have to sleep with either the fan or a radio on at all times. I’m going to be very strict with my kids wearing hearing protection at appropriate times if I ever have any.
 
This will be the first time I go to a doctor for it. It’s been bad enough that I am noticing it almost constantly. The usual ambient noise isn’t distracting me away from it anymore.

I’ve adjusted to it a tad bit. When it first increased it was actually giving me headaches and I was really having trouble concentrating.
 
It may be wise to have it checked out. It can be a symptom of a myriad of conditions.
 
Tinnitus. Huh. I wonder if that’s what I have. My ears started ringing when I had an ear infection in my early 20s and have never really stopped. I’m particularly adept at tuning things out, so it doesn’t bother me too much. Only when I get a headache. Most of the time I don’t notice it. I’ve never talked to a doctor about it, though.

Charbel, it’s certainly possible that God could use auditory cues to get your attention in prayer. God speaks in all kinds of ways. But then it’s also possible there is a medical explanation.
 
I did attend a few concerts in college. I actually have pretty good hearing overall. I can hear annoying things like the buzzing of light bulbs and power cords that most people can’t. The tv also bothers me if it is turned on loudly. I don’t listen to music anymore due to lyrics because I usually have at least one child with me. The children and I listen to audio books or pray the rosary in the car and I don’t use headphones. I take the kids to the movie theatre about once a month (which I find to be loud). I am really not in excessively loud environments. Is that how tinnitus comes on? Short intervals of ringing a few times a week?
 
I recall reading somewhere that ringing in the ears can be a result of angels trying to communicate with us.

But this something that should be addressed with your family doctor. It could be happening more frequently than you realize, you many only be aware of it when you’re in a relaxed state and free of distractions.
