Where is it proper to ring bells during the Divine Liturgy (Byantine-Rutehnian)? (No I’m not talking about the unapproved Latinization of ringing Latin sanctus bells.) I would like to learn about the Eastern tradition of ringing bells during the Divine Liturgy. Where is this documented in the liturgy? Thank you.

St Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church in Anchorage, Alaska has had a note on a wall within our bell room as such to ring bells.
  1. 5 minutes before Divine Liturgy
  2. At beginning of Divine Liturgy, during incensation.
  3. Ring bells 12 times during singing of the Nicene Creed.
  4. Pew Book, page 58–when Celebrant says—Offering you,…
and congregation sings–We Praise you …
  5. During, “It is Truly Proper” or “Irmos”, on pg 62, Pew Book.

Do you happen to know where this program came from? As I am in the Van Nuys Eparchy as well, I would be very interested to learn more. Thank you.

In regarding of where the ringing of bells originated-- we had a local prepared liturgicon under a former Pastor–Fr Steve Greskowiak, and it was placed in the area back in late 90’s, and just carried on till this day. Now I am sure you know that we ring the bells, at other various times of the year, for Pascha, and other occurances. The site of Orthodox gives great official reasons why bells are rung, and maybe since Byzantine is under the traditions of Orthodox–that could be where it came from?

I would think so…

Just remember they were Catholic traditions before they were Orthodox 😉

Thanks again…
