Passed away today at age 93. :sad_bye: He was an immensely talented actor, and one of my favorites. Prayers go out to him and his family…

He was fabulous in “the Wicker Man” and “The Man with the Golden Gun.” And many other roles. RIP.
I think I read somewhere that one of his parents was Greek, thus explaining his brooding dark looks. (Yet his English diction was crisp and very aristocratically British, a striking pairing, I always felt.)

He also served his country in exemplary fashion during WWII–as an agent of the Special Operations Executive nicknamed The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. When Peter Jackson told him “imagine what a man stabbed in the back sounds like”, Sir Christopher replied quite calmly “I don’t have to imagine what it sounds like.”

I watched 2 Christopher Lee films this weekend. 
I saw a 20 year old film called, A Feast at Midnight. It takes place in a boys boarding school. Christopher Lee plays a professor that the boys nicknamed “Raptor” It featured a homage to Jurassic Park in one scene. Also another scene was a homage to his Dracula films.
I then saw The Horror of Dracula. I am sure I saw it as a young teen. I enjoyed it this time as well. I enjoyed seeing Christopher Lee descend the various staircases.
I also remember, a class where (I guess it was an English class in seventh or eight grade) We had read a bit of Edgar Allen Poe so the discussion was on the horror genre. The teacher had asked who played Dracula in the films? She was fishing for the answer Bela Lugosi. I raised my hand and said “Christopher Lee” She told me I was wrong.
I also saw a number of short clips from interviews. He had a close friendship with Peter Cushing, and with Vincent Price.
He showed a picture of Peter Cushing and himself laughing. He then stated they were probably laughing over Sylvester the Cat, or Yosemite Sam, since they both enjoyed those cartoons. Wow!
He also held the world record for the most sword fights on screen.

An interesting role that he took was on a very solid episode of Space 1999 titled “Earthbound” as the leader of some aliens who are on their way to Earth on a ship that relies on suspended animation.
Space 1999 had many interesting guest roles played by famous British character actors like Lee, Leo McKern and Brian Blessed (Blessed appeared twice in two different roles). I read that a labor dispute between the British film industry and the actors’ union in the early 1970’s meant that for a time the only work to be had was on television.

One of my favorite actors since I was a child. I wrote to him when I was 10 and his publicity agent sent a signed photo, which I still have.

I believe it was said elsewhere that Lee was Catholic. He was actually Anglo-Catholic (which is what some high-church Anglicans call themselves). His mother was Catholic. This was discussed on Catholic Answers Live recently.
