RIP Thomas Howard: 1935-2020

October 15, 2020 at 10:41 pm

David Mills remembers his friend, the famous convert and prodigious writer, Thomas Howard.

The popular and in some cases almost idolized Catholic writer Thomas Howard has died, at the age of eighty-five.

The scion of a major American Evangelical family — his older sister being the Evangelical superstar Elizabeth Elliot — he went to the Evangelical mecca, Wheaton College, and was expected to rise in that world, his gifts apparent to everyone.

In one of his early books, An Antique Drum (later republished as Chance or the Dance?), the dedication to his professor Clyde Kilby thanks him for taking him by the arm and saying, “Look.” I think that explains much of his appeal. Though a man of clear beliefs, he was not an ideologue: because he looked. Not a salesman or a preacher, but a man who shared what he saw and loved — and therefore a very good salesman and preacher.

I am not well-acquainted with this individual; but he appears to have been quite a significant writer. A convert to Catholicism.

They discussed him as well as Jim Elliot, Evangelical protestant missionary and martyr (in Ecuador way back in 1956), both attended Wheaton college which I am vaguely familiar with. I’m unsure of the connection but will research it.

Okay, this explains it some, they may have been related. I found out that the sister of Howard, Elisabeth, married Jim Elliot.

So, there is quite a lot here.

There is a lot here.

I will look around the forum, surely, someone already posted some of this.

By the way, Cale Clarke discussed this on his Relevant Radio show, very good listening imho.

I saw Thomas Howard speak a couple times, and he was very impressive. Those converts (Scott Hahn, Tim Staples, Fr. Calloway, Jimmy Akin…) often have a great story and strong fervor for the faith.

I saw some videos at youtube where he speaks. . I will try to watch soon.

I never heard of this guy, so I read the articles to find out who he was.

I must say I was amused to learn that apparently some people use the word “Pope” as a verb meaning to convert to the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church.

Aw, I’m sad for us, but happy for him. I respected him very much.
