Podcast I listen to is going to review this movie next episode. Can’t wait.
 
I saw the “Risen” over the weekend.

It was good.

I liked seeing the Roman soldier save the apostles, and the secular and religious work together.
 
A group of my fellow seminarians and some priests went over the weekend. They all said they were disappointed. According to them: little use of symbolism, corny representations of theological mysteries, bad acting (by supporting cast, Fiennes was okay), etc.

Instead of posting someone else’s opinion, perhaps you can see the movie and say something about what you would have liked to have seen.

In my opinion the acting was good, and there were powerful messages woven subtly into the film which is the way good films work.

For example, the Roman centurion put a lot of effort into finding “the body” of Jesus after the resurrection. His search was a moral one, and he repeatedly was kind to those he had to interrogate. The result was that he found Jesus, not Jesus’ body, or a glimpse of Jesus, but he found Jesus face to face and was able to meet Him and talk to Him.

To me that is a strong message to anyone who wants to find Jesus. Put effort into the search and do your best to lead a moral life along the way especially in how you treat others, and you will find Him.

Another message is that people in the secular world who follow their consciences can do incredible things in service to God and humanity. The Roman centurion saved all the apostles in the movie.

I am surprised at your colleagues’ comments and am curious about what they would have liked to have seen in terms of a message, since I saw a lot.
 
There is certainly nothing wrong with passing along the opinions of respected friends, and my schedule is very full, so I wasn’t expecting to see it any time soon. However, in spite of that, I did go to see it yesterday, and I agree with them.

Well, one difference, I wouldn’t say the acting was bad, but I didn’t like the way it was written and directed at all. IMO the film felt very anti-climatic. I thought Fiennes did a fine job, but his character just wasn’t that interesting. He well conveys that he’s weary of his life, however the film itself conveys little tension. Let’s be honest, there’s absolutely no surprise that he’s going to have his conversion moment, and the path to it, IMO, was just wooden and expected. Many scenes felt very awkward, such as his overhearing of Jesus’ conversation with Peter. If you’re going to include something so momentous, IMO, take the time to draw out its significance. Also, Bartholomew’s “That’s why!” comment after the healing of the leper, which reduces Jesus to a benevolent miracle-worker. And the Romans chase sequence made it seem like the film was turning into the Hobbit/Lord of the Rings.

Anyway, you get the picture… I’d say 6/10.
 
I thought the movie was very good, do did my friend. I was disappointed that they left some things out but overall, I thought it was a good movie.
