I listened to a Jesuit on you tube speaking of once case of demonic possession

It seems the religious community is now coming around to believing in demonic possession once again…I wonder why their faith was so tepid they were blinded by science…granted you have to be sure first the person isn’t just ill , but Pope John Paul II performed two of them while he was pope

I certainly believe it can happen, scripture tells us Christ cast out demons

Could you help me understand a little better redrosetea? When you say you believe ***it ***can happen, do you mean demonic posession, exorcism, or both ?

Thanks.

This is a great sign! It really does look as if the nonsense is coming to an end. The Church is really improving at the moment; I think we may finally be entering the Springtime that was promised after Vatican II.

Pope Benedict is doing much to increase the amount of Exorcists in the Church who are properly trained. We cannot use exorcism to cure mental illness so care must be taken to evaluate people properly, but we cannot cure demonic activity with psychology. There is a need for both psychiatry and exorcism in the modern world, and thankfully, the Holy Father knows this.

Yes, demonic possession is real. There were some who thought that mental illness was the only cause of these outward manifestations. In some cases that may have been true. BUT NOT ALL. Pray for those priests who are tasked with performing the exorcisms. They as well as the victim are in need of prayer.

Scripture is replete with examples of devils being cast out by Jesus and by the apostles. This authority is still true and real. There are those who are given the minor order of exorcist. In pre-Vatican days, all to be ordained were given this minor order. Per Canon Law 1172 only a priest is is allowed to perform exorcisms and he must have specific preparation for this office, plus the priest who fulfills this office is to do so under the direction of the local ordinary (bishop). The Rite of Exorcism from the Roman Ritual is to be used for this. Permission of the local ordinary is required for each case. This is not something to play around with. Leave it to the experts.

Catholic are all exorcised… at their baptism, and again when they repeat those vows.

The most numerous possessions we are aware of occured when Christ walked the earth.

The devil was really mad then

Just a question: Christ went up to people (or they came up to him) who were physically unsound and said “your sins are forgiven”. Was this a casting out of demons? Also, if he could do that for physical unsoundness, he could surely do it for mental problems as well. So is there any way of figuring out if ‘mental problems’ could be the work of devils, etc, and if so, would exorcists be able to ‘forgive’ as Jesus did and cure the illness? Do you see what I’m saying? Thanks for any responses.

Yes, I believe it can happen. I’ve seen it up close…much closer than I wished and more frequently than I wished.

When one has to live through events such as those, it becomes very easy to lose respect for those who think making a film or going to see a film on demonic posession is a nice form of entertainment.

Along with demonic posession there exists demonic obsession; and there are probably a pile of variations or combinations of the two.

Compounding the difficulty for identification of posession or obsession is the fact that psychiatry is an imperfect science.

A person must be a priest to perform an exorcism, and in all cases must have the permission of the local bishop before performing an exorcism.

Although we lay people can’t perform exorcisms ourselves, our prayers, especially when combined with little renouncements or fasting [Matt 17:21] are a powerful weapon in this fight…even if we’re not allowed to see it. My favourite prayer in these cases is the Holy Rosary; our Blessed Mother in the number one exorcist.

If you haven’t seen the site at this link yet, Father Hardon writes a very interesting article on the subject.

In the commentary on Canon 1172 it says, **the Rite of Exorcism of the Roman Ritual is to be used, not the simple exorcisms that are part of the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults or the baptism of infants. **

Forgiveness of sin and exorcism are not the same thing. These are two entirely distinct functions if you would. Think of the paralytic on the mat, “Your sins are forgiven” And contrast this with the demoniac from whom Jesus cast out legions into the herd of swine. Not the same. In approaching a case of suspected possession Canon 1172 requires the following, "The Rite of Exorcism takes a most cautious approach to this phenomenon and requires the exorcist to have moral certainty of demonic possession before proceeding to celebrate the rite."

There is a you tube by the Jesuits that talks about events that happened during one exorcism

It can be dangerous…these people have super human strength
