I’ve been asked to help my parish in delivering the blessed sacrament to the sick or injured who cannot attend Sunday Mass. I’m already an extraordinary minister for the purpose of distributing Holy Communion during Mass.

Long story, but the short of it is that it does not appear there is any real training for this form of the rite in my parish. I’m asking for forum help with pointers to a detailed description of the rite appropriate for the circumstance. Can you help?

Blessings to all!

I would hope that your priest would give you, at least, some rudimentary training. I don’t know if you’ve access to the Rite but if it will help you I’ve attached a copy of it to this post.

I supervised the EMHCs to the sick for several years.

For a full service I used the mass, omitting the Eucharistic Prayer. That is I went directly from the Prayers of Petition after the Readings and homily to the Our Father. Where appropriate I changed pronouns to emphasize that I was speaking as part of the Congregation, not as the celebrant. [For the homily I used notes I jotted down at the mass where I got the hosts.]

I shortened it down a bit for the homes, according to the situation - omit one reading and/or the psalm, skip the Gloria and/or Credo, etc.

In the hospital, or if someone was not up to an extensive prayer, I had a bare bones model: Penitential Rite [Confiteor], Gospel, Our Father, This is the Lamb of God, gave them Communion, read the Communion Prayer to provide the recipient a few moments to reflect, and gave them a blessing.

The Church has guidance for this ministry, no need to guess or make one up.

You should use the Rite/guidance the Church provides. For example, the USCCB has this: usccbpublishing.org/productdetails.cfm?PC=252

It’s too bad your parish or diocese does not provide training. They really should.

Our Pastoral Associate comes into the room and after some chit chat fishes the pyx out of her bag, says an Our Father and gives Holy Communion and after the recipient has consumed the Host the conversation is resumed. 😦
