Hi!

The rite of reception into the cathecumenate usually is in ending november, am i right?

But is it obligatory that it must be that time or can a person enter catechumenate at any time?

What is the rule about someone who wants to become a catholic but had not the possibillity to be in the rite of reception and thereafter dies before having that possibillity, did he die a death without the grace of being a catechumenate and will not also obtain the baptism of desire?

I mean from what time does a person qualify for the baptism of desire without having been baptized?

There is no specific time for the rite of Acceptance. I usually avoid the end and beginning of the ltiurgical year. This year we did several rites. One during Lent, one after Easter and one the end of June for that is when our inquirers were ready to enter the catechumenate.

Baptism of desire does not depend on a rite. God knows what is in your heart. If you truly desired baptism God knows it so if you die before going through the rites then you are probably OK (except maybe for some purgatory time)

the Rite of Acceptance into the Order of the Catechumenate can be done any time, even several times during the year, as individuals are ready for it. It is my understanding, although I have no practical experience with this issue is that as long as the candidate has expressed the desire to become Catholic through participation in the process, even though they may not have yet experienced any of the introductory rites, they are catechumens, and as such can have Christian burial etc. Anything else is left up to God, the rite or absence of the rite won’t change things when deceased comes face to face with Him.

Yes someone can enter the catechumenate at any time, and it is a grave abuse to tell an inquirer “come back next year, we have already started the class for this year.” That does not mean someone who comes to us in November will be ready for sacraments at Easter, but RCIA is meant to be a year-round process, and at any given time, persons involved will be at different stages of the journey. It takes as long as it takes and there is no guarantee or magic about 1 year, 9 months, 2 years etc.

The Rite of Reception is the Rite through which a Baptized person is received into the Catholic Church, it contains a profession and the Sacraments of Confirmation and Holy Communion. It can be celebrated at any time except during the Triduum. And should be celebrated 2 or 3 times a year in the parish.

You are thinking of the Rite of Acceptance, this is the Rite an Inquirer goes through when entering the Order of Catechumens. It should also take place usually twice a year.

A persons canonical status changes AFTER the Rite of Acceptance. They are permitted a Catholic burial, Baptism of Desire is assumed because of their public profession of desire for Baptism which is contained in the wording of the Rite of Acceptance. However a pastor may ask permission of the Bishop to celebrate funeral Rites for someone in the Inquiry phase. Remember God is not limited by canon or liturgical laws only God nows the true status of their soul.

I was enquiering about that in the other thread so you mean that i am not entitled to a catholic funeral if i die tomorrow

Your pastor could decide to ask permission of the Bishop. Technically you have the right to a Christian burial when you are a Catechumen. When do you become a Catechumen? After you participate in the Rite of Acceptance into the Order of Catechumens. This is why it is a public Rite of the Church and is just not something nice to do. It changes your canonical status within the Church. You publicly state your desire for Christian Baptism witnessed by the Christian community.

I have been waiting for it for months, i will not be in classes, the priest himself will hold the courses necessary but he wants to wait for after christmas and has just been giving me books.

I had contact with the parish since at least 7-8 months but still no rite of acceptance, so what am i supposed to do?

Im getting confused he says that i must participate in the mass and in january we will have more regular talks, but that i should not worry because if something happens i would be considered baptized by desire and be entitled to a catholic funeral.

But according to him and you i am not a catechumen yet as i didnt pass any rite.

So what am i supposed to do? Take him by the neck and demand the rite? contact the bishop and say that everything is to slow?

I dont know what to do i expressed my desire of baptism and thats not enough lets hope i wont die before passing the rite then, when that will happen, has been some months now. And i am not a member of the swedish state church i demanded my exit from it 20 years ago so im hanging in the air doesnt belong to this neither to that and the catholic church didnt give me the chance to pass the rite of acceptance yet.

So what am i supposed to do???

Well first you have done nothing wrong, Christ knows this. He also knows you desire to become a Christian and receive Baptism. I would contact the diocese, explain to them that you would like to enter RCIA, the number of months since you inquired about the Catholic Faith. They may direct you to a parish that has an established RCIA process near you. The Bishops have said that even though private instruction is when necessary a valid option, they desire that the RCIA be the norm established in every parish.

There is also no reason why your pastor even though he is providing one on one catechetical instruction cannot follow the RCIA process for the RItes.

I guess he is intending to follow it he just wanted me to have some more basic knowledge when we start the talks but i guess he is somehow like “there is no hurry, God is not limited by time” thinking.

As i said i sent him a mail to inquire about my status and the reply was that we will talk about that on saturday when we have a meeting. I guess thats a good time to bring up all i was saying here. I trust in him its a good person so im not thinking of changing anything.

He also did individual catechesis before with the knowledge of our bishop and for me it should fit me better because of my work, it would be more flexible in time and not limited to 6 am monday and thursday for example.

There is no reason why he cannot follow the RCIA, and use the proper Rites, with the Catechesis being one on one. I would assume that there are no others? Or as you say it would fit better into your work schedule. I would let him know that participating in the proper Rites at the proper times would be of great importance to you.

It is a small parish and yes there are no others for the moment and i assume he is going to follow the rites when it is time for more regular meetings in january i guess he will also follow the rites.

So during this time of Advent, watch, prepare spiritually, and look forward to the future.
