"Rite of Welcome" in place of Penitential Rite?

The priest did not use the actual “Rite of Welcome” as it has been described. If anything, the “welcome” was some sort of “meet and greet”. It was back in November, so I don’t remember every detail exactly, but it wasn’t the RCIA “Rite of Welcome” he did. It was more like nothing.

The Rite of Welcome is not “made up” - it is, however, very specific to one situation, and one situation only - the initiation of baptized Candidates into the Period of Catechesis as part of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. It is not appropriate at any other time.
If you read the OP, he did not refer to the approved RCIA version of the Rite of Welcome. That’s all well and good for that particular liturgy. Furtherthemore, the OP, in a subsequent post, was very careful in distinguishing what legitimately belongs to RCIA and what he saw (non-RCIA Mass).

As I said earlier, in a normal setting (non-RCIA), this innovation does not exist.

No, I understand that. The priest was justifying whatever it was that he did (which I still don’t know, and is probably none of my business) by saying that the Rite of Welcome can also replace the Penitential Rite, as if to say, “Well, they can do it, so, so can I.”

My point was to say that the Penitential Rite isn’t replaced like that unless there is a very specific liturgical reason.

Heh, she’ll come soon enough I’m sure. As for the “rite”, it is abuse-related, because I received a response letter to the letter I sent back in November after a particularly unsettling Mass “experience” I had. The priest in question wrote that there is a “Rite of Welcome” which can take the place of the “Penitential Rite”; I brought this up with him because we went straight to the Kyrie with nothing prior, and it was a Kyrie without invocations.
japhy, I’ll sure be glad when you post the full letter of his on your website, it’s driving me NUTS!!!
