i am a sacristan and do not know when to use the ritual mass book and when to use the Sunday lectionarl?

I am a head sacristan and I don’t know what a “ritual mass (sic) book” is.

Depending upon your country, diocese and/or parish your options may vary, but Roman missal + three lectionaries (Sunday, weekdays, saints’ feasts) is the general standard. The Roman missal is used by the celebrant for all Masses. Which lectionary to make available for the reader(s) depends on the liturgical day; guidance for this is found in the provincial (local) Ordo.

Note that the Sunday lectionary is sometimes used on other days of the week. In France, for example, Friday (Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus) called for the Sunday lectionary, as that volume that contains the readings for all Solemnities honoring Jesus Christ, regardless of whether or not the Solemnity falls on a Sunday.

When in doubt, consult the Ordo and/or ask your priest. God bless!

Are you referring to two different Lectionaries? One would contain the readings for weddings, Confirmations, Ordinations, etc. One would contain the readings for Sundays. There would normally two others for weekdays.

But if by “Ritual Mass Book” you mean the Roman Missal, you’d use that one on the altar for every Mass.

I am in the Green Bay WI diocese.Today for example, for the Sacred Heart, we used the Roman Missile fory for r the feast day and the Sunday lectionary for the readings. I just don’t know what the ritual mass book is used for/

Roman missal + Sunday lectionary sounds perfectly normal to me for this Solemnity. I explained above why we used the Sunday lectionary on a Friday.

If preparing the liturgical books is part of your responsibility and you don’t know how to do it, please ask your priest to train you. I was once confused as well. Since my pastor educated me, I can now do this in my sleep and get it right every time. 😀

Your best bet is to open it and look to see how it’s laid out. That should give you a good idea of when it would be used.

There is a Lectionary that contains the readings for Common of Saints, Ritual Masses, Masses for Various Needs and Occasions, Votive Masses, and Masses for the Dead.

Ritual Masses are weddings, funerals, confirmations, ordinations, etc. That’s when you’d use that one.
