Most of my posts are depressing, and so I wanted to lighten things up a bit and ask a silly question. 😃

I am going on vacation next week with one other person, and I am trying to think of some fun and yummy food to bring. I really dislike grabbing lunch at a rest stop because of how unhealthy the choices tend to be (and the last thing I want to have happen is for one of us to get sick).

At any rate, I would love to get some lunch ideas out of this post! Any thoughts? What do you usually like to bring on a road trip?

Thanks in advance!

Don’t knock all the road stops, some of them are actually pretty good! Though not if you’re watching your weight…

As for snacks, last road trip we has hummus and pita bread… just spread it like peanut butter.

I REALLY like the hummus and pita bread idea. Thank you for taking the time to respond to my post!

Savoury biscuits and those cheese triangles that do not need refrigeration.

Small packs of dried fruit or dried fruit and nuts.

Home made granola.
Combine with nuts and m&ms to make homemade trail mix! Yum.

When my girlfriends and I went on a road trip we did regular PB&J sandwiches just to get us through traffic and such.

Third the idea of hummus…though, i like it on crackers and bagels (spread like PB too).

Bring plenty of bottled water and juice boxes.

I second the idea of not counting out all rest stops. Ever watch Diner’s, Drive-Ins and Dives?
Some of the smallest places you would never guess has some excellent and healthy food. You just need to know where to look!

When we travel we usually stop in brew pubs. We have never been disappointed with the food. I think that commitment to brewing good beer inclines brew pubs to use fresh ingredients in creative combinations in their food. There are apps that can lead you to brew pubs as you travel.

For a car munchies we take pretzel sticks and/or triscuits with some aerosol cheese. We also take some granola bars, bags of stuffed pretzels and some gummy bears

YES! Watermelon is also a fabulous idea! Thanks for answering šŸ™‚
Except that watermelon is a diuretic - be prepared to make more ā€œwaterā€ stops…

Fruit
Bottled water
Homemade sandwiches
Trail mix
Popcorn, but don’t eat too much!
Granola bars

A person after my own heart! GUMMY BEARS RULE.

šŸ‘

I also have a weakness for spray cheese…

Everybody says that. It’s never worked on me. My mom always packed watermelon and frozen grapes when we went on trips.

Well you are the exception. There’s always someone who is, but for the rest of usā€¦šŸ˜Š

I’m another exception! šŸ˜› But then I’m also one who can drink coffee and go to bed half an hour later and sleep peacefully until the alarm rings in the morning.

Our road trips involve miles and miles of woods and dirt roads so packing a lunch is a must. We usually fill the cooler with water & juice, cut up veggies, grapes, cold cuts, cheeses, hummus (for me). Picnic basket has crusty rolls, crackers, cereal bars (Nature Valley are favorites) and condiments.

Husband is a Scout leader so travel usually also includes a one-burner stove and a set of nesting pots. That’s how I was able to come back to the motel from Mass one Saturday evening to find a salmon dinner ready for me. He’d set up kitchen in the parking lot and had cooked potatoes, poached salmon, fresh green beans and tossed a salad (motel was just across the street from a grocery store) so we could just eat in our room and not have to go to a restaurant.😃

Sounds like our cooler. And picnic basket, although all of our stuff is gluten free. šŸ‘

We also have a Burton Stove. We use it for really long trips when we need a second meal.

We put taco meat or sloppy joes in it, then put that on top of a baked potato or salad. šŸ‘

This is usually the stove DH uses.

The best places I’ve found to eat are brew pubs. My favorite is an institution in New Hampshire called Moat Mountain.

Amazing beer and amazing food. It looks like an old bed and breakfast with a huge parking lot. Let me tell you…they need that parking lot…it gets packed in there.
