My girlfriend and I of 4 years were thinking of taking a road trip across our state and planned to stay somewhere just for the night. Obviously we can’t room together, but what about sleeping in the same car together? One in the front of the car and the other in the back seat? Either that or I had planned on getting her a motel room to herself while I sleep in the car.

Thoughts or suggestions? Thanks

Its a tough question. You’re going to get a lot of answers that say some variation of “don’t do it!” but AS LONG AS YOU BEHAVE its probably not a big deal for a single night on a road trip. If possible I’d have a separate room.

Now, that being said, you really need to think hard about how difficult it is to behave in such a circumstance.

Do you have a friend or relative you can stay with? When I was young, I did quite a bit of road tripping and never used a hotel–a friend or distant cousin were always willing to let me couch surf for a night. Now that I’m older and the home owner, I often have hosted travelers–some whom I’ve never met but are friends of family or friends.

Sleeping in a car is quite dangerous and in many places illegal. If you have a tent, perhaps you can find a state park campground to crash for the night. Sleep under the stars if need be.

Some couples struggle with sins when the near occasion arises, others do not. I would say if you are a part of the prior then you should be able to deal with the situation without sinning.

I think it’s something you need to discern as individuals and as couples. There is nothing inherently evil about sleeping in the same area as a person you are dating, though.

I would not recommend an overnight trip at all until the two of you are a married couple, because sleeping arrangements are not the only issue, nor the only time on such a trip that temptations may hit.

I know that I, as the woman in that situation, would be placed in an emotionally vulnerable and difficult position on such a trip with someone to whom I felt romantically attracted, and for me it would be a near occasion of sin.

Some couples may be able to handle it without any difficulty for either of them, but unfortunately, it’s difficult to know for certain until you are in the situation. I wouldn’t want to risk it.

Just something to consider.

You’re going to get opinions and answers that are all over the map on this one.

There is another thread similar to this that popped up recently. The difference was this was a brand new couple still working out what their relationship status was.

You two have been together for 4 years. Only you and your girlfriend know what is an occasion of sin for you and what is not.

When my husband and I were in your position…it would have been seriously easy for us to just get a hotel room together and sleep in the same bed. We wouldn’t have had any issue save the possibility of causing a scandal.
Sleeping in the same car together would have been a totally fine for us…but not every couple is the same.

Talk to your girlfriend about this.

I don’t see why you couldn’t just get a hotel with two beds…?? Keep your clothes on, no different than being in a room together anywhere else. Hotel room doesn’t always have to equal sex!

You should be careful about this. If you stay with a relative, I see no problem. If I knew a couple that are travelling together, I would assume that they are having sex. If this assumption is okay with you, there of course would be no problem with this for you. Personally, if I knew a girl that traveled so with her boyfriend, I would never have considered marrying her. You also could be the object of some hurtful gossip because of this.

My daughter and son-in-law took a six week cross country camping trip together before they were married. It was almost like a test of character, I.e. if they could get along under the very primitive circumstances of the trip, they could certainly handle bring married.

They were both committed to no sex before marriage, and when they married a year later they had kept that commitment. Our priest does not see a lot of that, and was impressed.

Many people will question the wisdom of this but it all comes down to individuals, strength of will, and commitment. You do not need to have your own apartment, car, or go on an extended trip to have sex, if you did there wouldn’t be any pregnant teenagers. Correspondingly just going on a short trip will not necessarily be an occasion of sin. Keep busy. If you are perpetually exhausted as our campers were, it is less of an issue.

Gossip and what other people think is not the best reason for acting.

+1. I would just like to reinforce how important this is.

I think gossip is often times mistaken as scandal. Do not get confused between the differences between scandal and gossip.

You wouldn’t marry someone who had premarital sex?

This.
Have you ever slept in a car?

  1. 4 years? If you’re over 23, pop the question or let her go. Make a decision, will ya? 🙂
  2. His 'n hers pup tents. There is a campground about every 50 miles across the rural American interstate system. They even show them on the blue info signs. Unless it’s a weekend or holiday you don’t even need reservations. National Forests are generally the cheapest, but usually lack showers and flush toilets.

I would personally get two seperate hotel rooms. I would not challenge yourself by being in the same room or car while sleeping. It would simply be too temtping.

Logically, I would say staying seperate would be best.
