I’m new to this forum, and am currently a protestant. I heard today that in the RC the deacons are paid. Is this true, and if it is, is it a recent development or does it date to antiquity? Approximately how much are they paid? Is it a full time job? Thanks for helping.

First, there are two types of deacons, permanaent and transitional. Transitionals are studying to be priests, whilepermanant deacons hold other jobs and often have wives and children. I can’t answer your questions as to payment, but I ope I’ve helped.

Perm deacons generally are not paid, though some may recieve stipends for travel expenses.

SOME perm deacons do work full time for the Church in different capacities - administrators, school teachers, Religious Ed directors… While these fellows may be paid, it is generally for the work they are doing above and beyond their diaconal work.

Deacons are not paid for their work in the parish unless they are specifically employed for a reason other than the fact that they are a deacon. Some parishes pay deacons a very small stipend but it is basically not enough to buy gas for a week or two. deacos are expected to ssupport themselves and their families.
