Without going into a lot of detail, my store was robbed today.

The robbers had a gun on my employees, tied them up for hours, laughed at them, and took several thousand dollars.

My one employee is petrified now. I mean really terrified. The more I think about it, I’m angry and scared. The more I thought about it, I realized I might want to look at a conceal carry permit. But, then again, I’m not sure if I want to kill someone.

However, it they could have easily been killed this morning. Anyone else have some advice or been in a similar situation.

It’s natural to react this way in the time immediately following a frightening incident like this. It’s not a good time to make decisions, however. Take a little time, let yourself calm down, consider the pros and cons and make a good, prayerful decision. I have no idea what the best course of action will turn out to be, just that you need a little time.

What kind of store? A local Cricket phone outlet has a German Shepherd in the back–they only accept cash. Bullet-proof glass can be used in some applications, or even just a good hunk of Lexan to stand behind when doing cash transactions. One liquor store owner, an ex-cop, sits in the back room with a shotgun as does the owner of a neighborhood fish market. Everybody knows what that two-way mirror means. Might want to try a two-way mirror in a boxed out safe room area with a steel door, even if it is just for effect, see?

For $75 per person you could get personnel their own pro tazers. That’s fantastic for non-lethal weaponry that will drop your perp. Ditto a holster with a fat can of mace, as one cafe waitress on the highway packs. That’s an easy 15 foot range. Tazers and mace work well on drugged out psychos who won’t stop even if you shoot them. Those kind act kamikaze fast, by the way, so be prepared to “fire” and not wait for “ready, aim…”

It is imperative you do something at once, something visible. Your store is now known for having a wad of cash on hand. It is common to get double-dipped, robbed again fairly soon by the same perps. This experience was a blessing in disguise because now you are ready. Review your cash handling protocol. You can get a security company to come by and guard you while you come out with cash. One system is to carry the real cash out in a fast food sack.

Get some game cameras from your local hunting outlet, ones with high resolution lenses. From $60-200, these are battery operated, rugged, take fantastic pictures with IR/infrared light even in low light, and are much cheaper and more reliable than hard-wired systems. They can take loads of photos if you get a big memory card. They trigger when they sense movement. Just erase the internal memory card at the end of the week if nothing goes wrong. Bushnell’s has screw holes to securely mount, and lock lugs to tamper-proof the case and, anyway, thieves will not tend to figure out where the pictures are stored as with typical cameras with external memory. Run a cable into an old computer box anyway. They’ll take the box, not the pictures. Cameras are a wonderful deterrent, especially as those IR lights glow at night for all to get the picture, so to speak.

Announcer tones are handy for keeping everybody alert when new customers come in. Radio shack has one for $20 that runs on a 9V battery. Remote security company dialers like the “I’ve fallen and I can’t get up” dongles add to a sense of well-being. Concealed carry should be encouraged for all personnel. Taurus makes The Judge. While it is a hefty revolver, it takes a small shotgun shell. Get everybody permitted to discourage any lawsuits by criminals-turned-victims. Competence and judgment are needed. And of course, get plenty of liability insurance. As for good ol’ Catholic-style security, a ball bat has been the athletic equipment of choice. A Louisville Slugger is what the Redemptorist Brother/sacristan chose to carry in clearing and locking Our Mother of Perpetual Help Church, 333 Broadway, Kansas City. Come visit. It’s an exquisite church and you’re quite safe.

Saint Gertrude the Great’s convent was robbed–12th century Bavaria–and this mighty mystic gave Jesus an earful about what she thought He should do to the miscreant. Christ gave her a task instead, that of fasting and praying for the conversion of the $%^& thief. (Can you imagine crossing a Bavarian nun? Read LA POPESSA about Sister Pascalina, Piux XII’s right-hand nun, to get what I mean. It’s out-of-print but worth the hunt.) In that vein, OREMUS:

**Tender Baby Jesus, the Holy Innocents suffered a fate meant for You. Our Father gave the Blessed Virgin Mary the powerful and meekly obedient Saint Joseph to allay such dangers, giving him inspiration from the Holy Angels in his dreams as with beloved Daniel, who foretold Your coming. Let the Holy Spirit inspire us in preventing and avoiding danger; and bring us saintly aid with Saint Joseph’s intercession; and the direction and protection of the Holy Angels.

Bring that greatest of miracles, and receive our praise and thanks, for converting, in advance of any harm to us, those who would forfeit their eternal souls and endanger our peace, our lives and fortunes. Bring us Your peace that surpasses all understanding and receive our eternal, adoring gratitude, all for Your honor and glory. AMEN **

PS Don’t forget the sacramentals. Dose your place with Holy Water. Blessed St. Benedict medals with the encoded exorcism prayers go on every door and window. And plenty of green scapulars that seem to act as spiritual bug repellent. We fight not against men, but against powers and principalities, i.e., demons. St. Michael, protect and defend us.

PPS Don’t forget the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or similar desensitizing therapy by a pro if anybody is post-traumatically stressed.

Why would owning a gun be bad? In Switzerland literally everyone owns a gun and it has the lowest crime rate in Europe. It is a prudent course of action.

How much value did those robbers put on the life of you and your employees? Would they have hesitated to shoot the lot of yous?
The very presence of another gun could have ended with all of you dead. As a defender you could not hesistate one second. And even without an opposing they could have shoot you all just for giggles.

May the Lord have mercy on your thieves. We should all pray for their repentence.

May the Lord’s love embrace your terrified employee and heal the fear caused by this incident.

Isn’t there a law that states one needs to own a firearm and be proficent with it?

Perfect advice above.

At the end of the day, you nailed it OP. If you are going to carry, you MUST be ready to kill someone. If you are not prepared to do this you open yourself and those around you to a situation where your weapon can be taken from you and used against you. You can not hesitate, you have to be able to make that split second decision to kill. You don’t carry a weapon to just hurt or scare someone.

So - take some time, and think and pray about this. Either decision is not right or wrong. It depends on what is right for you and your family and business.

God bless - I hope you all can overcome this horrific event soon.

This is a question you really should discuss with your local police department.

Personally, I would go for arming all your employees with training from your police department. But, you should maybe install panic buttons that contacts the police.

You and your employees may be alive because you did not have guns to shoot it out.

Push for liberal gun laws in your area. Here in Michigan, a local area loosened up their gun laws, many more people are carrying in that area and crime rates went way down.

I believe that the presence of another gun would have driven out the intruders, rather than resulted in a shoot out.

My house is out in the deep woods and there are a lot of natural predators around; wolves and bears and such. If they think that it’s going to be too much trouble to attack me because I fired a few warning shots in the air, they will leave me alone. Most of the time they’ll run if you appear aggressive or fight back in some way. The same principle could be applied to the robbers. Some deterrants would be prudent.

No, it is not bad to want to protect yourself and your employees, and of course, your loved ones. I’d first start by determining what the laws are where you live. If it’s legal for you to have, carry or keep a gun at your business, then I’d take a class on how to use and keep a gun. They are not toys. They are tools of defense, and they are serious. Where I live, they have a class that you have to pass before you get a permit to have a gun. We can carry guns, we can keep them at home, and we can have them at our businesses.

If you have no intention of shooting your attacker, don’t bother taking it out or pointing one at him/them because they will just disarm you and use it on you themselves. If you have any doubts that you would use the gun to protect yourself or your loved ones, it will be more of a liability in your hands. I would take the classes and then determine what you want to do later. But definitely take the classes.

While in Graduate School, I was a desk clerk at a large motel. One night, I was robbed at gunpoint. The robber threatened to kill me, and i have to admit, I was more scared with him than I was when I was in combat in Vietnam.

Unless you really know how to use a gun, you would only make it more likely that you, or someone else would be killed or injured if it ever came to using one. More often than not, people get hurt with a weapon that someone is keeping for defense, than they do by a robber.

It takes a LOT of practice to be a good shot (I know, I was on an Army Pistol team for two years). We practiced every day, shooting at least 500 rounds at a time. To even be consistent, you should practice at least weekly, and shoot at least 50-100 rounds. Most people that own guns don’t practice at all. If it ever happens that they pull out their weapon, they typically either freeze, or they shoot wildly.

If you don’t, you are as likely to shoot an innocent person as you are the person threatening you.

It is better to not resist, give the robber what they want, and get them out of your store. Money can be replaced that’s one reason to have insurance). A life, or a permanent injury, can NOT be given back.

Imagine how you would feel if you killed someone. I can promise that you would NEVER forget it.

Now days i wouldn’t try to make that stement, the value of a person’s life means little to some.

yeah but critters don’t point firearms at you.

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

It’s just a moderate retail store. I really don’t want to go into anymore details.

Things are a little better today. I just feel nervous whenever a customer comes in now. I’ve had experience shooting rifles/shotguns before, so I know how to handle a gun. I just can’t get over someone robbing us.

It’s just that there is that one moment, that you don’t know if you are going to live or die…and all over a couple hundred bucks. It’s the lowest anyone can ever feel, trust me.

The thing about using deadly force in a business situation is that you have to be able to identify the bad guys from the good guys, and you yourself don’t want to be mistaken for a bad guy.

The bad guy knows who he is. Everyone else he can shoot.

The good guy has to make sure he isn’t shooting a uniformed cop, a plainclothes cop, another clerk with a weapon, a customer with a weapon, or someone with a cell phone in their hand.

Advantage? Bad guy.

I fail to see how people with naught but evil and thievery in their hearts qualify as ‘persons’.

The persons refered to in my post is the intended victim.(s)
No man have greater love than one who would give their life.

Literally everyone?? I doubt that. 😉

Yeah, but the animals are usually smarter than criminals in this regard.

We must treat everyone with some degree of dignity, even the most evil.

Two posters took what I said out of context 👍

It was the moral of the story. MOST robbers aren’t desperate or deranged enough to want to rob you when you have deterrants. VERY FEW, unfortunately, are. Same with the critters.

I was hoping I wasn’t going to have to spell it out. 🤷
