Hello - I’ve read a few posts on here suggesting that the Diocese of Rochester has fallen into heterodoxy. I’d like to hear some more about this. This saddens me, as I was born and baptized in Rochester (though raised outside of the Church). On my next visit, I plan to attend Mass at the church in which I was baptized, St. John the Evangelist in Greece.

Can anyone comment more on this subject? Are there just some bad churches? If so, which ones? How are the churches in Greece?

The Church of Rochester remains in full communion with the Holy See.

Yes, but are they Orthodox? Are they in line with Catholic teaching or doing their own thing?

I currently attend 2 very orthodox churches in Rochester - one for daily mass and then my parish at which I am registered for Sat and Sunday mass.

The priests in my current parishes are often giving homilies on sin, abortion, homosexual marriages, etc. We have daily Adoration and confession before mass each day.

I believe you can find parishes here that are liberal ( I switched from one) and then the very orthodox. I continue to pray that the liberal churches are guided by the Holy Spirit.

My mom is in the Rochester, NY diocese. Her pastor does some funky stuff . . . on Holy Thursday, he had parishoners wash eachother’s feet. “Jesus told people to serve one another” is how he justified it. He openly told people he didn’t like George Bush, though he never said publically who he would vote for. I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt and not assume I know who he voted for! I am glad to hear there are faithful pastors in Rochester. —KCT

To be heterodox is to be out of full communion with the Unviersal Church. Now, we can accept some lag for information getting from point A to Point B, but I think people need to cool their jets if they are going to suggest that whole dicoeses are in a long standing state of heterodox yet the Holy Father remains in full communion with them.

If someone wants to make the point that they prefer a more traditional liturgy, or are looking for a parish with a particularly strong pro-life witness or with certain forms of spirituality or emphasis, or one that is particular rigourous with the rubrics, or suited to more conservative tastes, that’s fine.

Scotty, while your visiting might I suggest you come out to Gates and join us at St Nicholas Melkite Greek Catholic Church? Its just down the road from St John. Take Long Pond to Spencerport Rd, turn right and we are on the left just before Elmgrove.

Divine Liturgy starts at 10:30am on Sunday.

Thanks Katherine2. There are some really GREAT parishes in this diocese! and then some that need to be cleaned up. May the Holy Spirit leads us to parishes that are doing His will.

I will not speak ill of my Bishop. I think that is a sin in and of itself.

Yeah, poor choice of words. Thanks. I should’ve simply used the term “liberal.”

Thanks, David. I usually only visit for two days, meaning I will probably only have the opportunity to take in one Mass. I plan on visiting St. John’s on my next visit, but I will certainly keep your invitiation in mind for a future visit!

No problem. Glad we cleared that up

I may be moving out to Rochester later this year, so I was planning on starting a thread to ask people who lived there if they had a favorite parish, etc. I am so grateful to see this thread, because I’ve been hoping for guidance about this move.

Scotty,

I sent you a private message extoling the virtues of my parish is Charlotte! 🙂

well - don’t fear. The Holy Spirit will guide you where you need to be - if you do move. There are some awesome parishes here. I just LOVE mine.

Sounds like Timidity does too!

Hi jrabs - where do you worship, if I might ask?

Thanks, jrabs. How have you been doing? I thought of you on December 8th. We were so busy with end-of-term then that I could barely think!
BTW, where is the best place to get a green scapular?

Our Lady of Victory in downtown Rochester during the weekdays and then Holy Spirit in Webster on weekends.

Oddly enough, I was at a liberal church in the burbs when the Holy Spirit urged me to move on to His namesake church.

Hi there Tantum. I have thought of you often and you are in my prayers as my spiritual buddy through the Immaculate Heart of Mary. I PM’d you during the process, but at the time PM was not working well.

Ahhh, now on to the Green Scapular…
You can purchase the Green Scapular at any catholic store or on-line. They are inexpensive - and farrrr cheaper at the store. Here is a cheap place to order on line at $3.00 per scapular.

My invitation to the Divine Liturgy at St Nicholas Melkite Greek Catholic Church in Gates, NY, stands.

Just let me know and I will gladly help you out with it!

Thanks, Byz!

Since returning to the Catholic faith, I’ve always wanted to see the services of the other Rites. I’ve never attended one out of fear of causing offense.

(I keep hoping that someday EWTN will televise the various services.)
