Hi all,

I’ve recently been getting into rockabilly focusing mostly on modern acts out of Europe, while not forgetting the classics like Eddie Cochran and Carl Perkins. However, a lot of the modern rockabilly groups present a very misogynistic and pessimistic view of the world, despite their catchy beats and melodies :mad: In spite of this, can anyone make any recommendations for any decent rockabilly groups that are Catholic or non-Catholic, or if not at least present a positive outlook of life? Thanks.

Quick side note, “Wiccan” on a Catholic forum. Please. It’s a made up religion like Protestantism, not some ancient witchy poo faith. For the record, a double c in Old English is pronounced "tch’ and a is a nomnative masculine ending, thus “wiccan” means a male witch. ppfffttt. But whatever…

Im from New Orleans, La. which has a huge rockabilly/greaser scene which is all Catholic. Oddly enough I have met a number of yankee rockers which are either religiously indifferent or pagan of some nature which is completely bizarre…

As to Rockabilly bands that are Catholic, Im not actually aware of any whose lyrics are staunchly Catholic. There are some bands which are okay that are Catholic but not rockabilly, like Seven Sorrows. Two of the guys from Pitbullfarm are Catholic but it’s not any part of their music. Scotty from Day of the Sword/Break the Sword was raised Catholic but wandered off into some odd manner of Protestantism at some point, but their music is at least Christian. Sorry I can help more.
 
I’m Catholic and actually am a rockabilly guitarist. I’ve played in regular (secular) bands for years, but would love to start up a Catholic / Christian group. But its tough finding Christian musicians because they all want to be a singer/songwriter K-LOVE style band.

There are not too many current rockabilly / 50s acts that are Christian. Already mentioned are the Altar Billies and Pioneers Hot Rod Church. There were also The Found Cats and The Screaming Rays, who are no longer but both can be found on YouTube. Its a shame there are so few because most of the original '50s rockers were Christians and eventually recorded gospel albums (Elvis, Cash, Wanda, Lewis, etc.).

Also, Brian Setzer has stated in interviews that he is Catholic. You can tell by some of the religious Christmas songs he’s recorded. He also wrote a song about St. Jude.

I need to look into this more. The only thing I remember was the 80’s when Brian Seltzer did “Stray Cat Shuffle”.

I totally agree. All are welcomed here! I was lurking here too before I became Catholic. Wiccans are amazing people to have conversations with. I knew one from an old career and he was shocked that I would listen to him. He was used to Christians shutting him out.

WiccanWoman, I’m a musician and found one of these websites to be very helpful. Thank you!
 
I just came across another Christian Rockabilly group from the '80s called The Lifters. Can’t find too much about these guys, but some of their songs are posted on YouTube.

That’s out of line. They’re being respectful of you, you should show them the same courtesy.
 
Check out Tavo & The Flat Black Thrillers and Johnny Hatton’s Gospel Bop - these guys have serious rockabilly credentials and perform worship and praise music. Both are on iTunes. I’m doing a show with Tavo this weekend, and although it is at a Protestant church, it’s all the same Jesus.

I’d love to see a rockabilly Mass!
