I’m new to the forum, though I’ve already read lots of threads/posts in the last two weeks. Good stuff here!
So my curiosity is regarding the fact of the Orthodox claim that Reason plays too big a role in the Theology of the Western (Catholic) Church. And I can understand to a point what they mean by that. However, I’ve recently been reading up on the Catholic Church and have grown to truly appreciate and even love what (or Who) the Catholic Church is. And in terms of Theology, I’ve read up on the differences: they do exist, but it seems that the differences are almost too difficult for the average - or even the astute - armchair theologian to fathom.
I was challenged by my priest to consider that the theological differences are actually greater than I think. In truth, I came to Orthodoxy by reading and thinking about its history and theology. At this point, it seems I have to use REASON to distinguish between which of these “lungs” (the Pope’s words, NOT the Orthodox priest’s) is the True Church, a decision that seems to come down to Theology (as well as an interpretation of history).
Thus, it seems to me that Reason would play a larger role in determining the Truth of the East - whereas, quite frankly, it is my heart that leans West …
So, Catholic and Orthodox Christians alike: please help me out here! (Mind, I’m not interested necessarily in discussing which is the True Church, but discussions of differences in Theology, especially the Nature of the Trinity, and how Reason plays a role in this, are welcome.)
