I was reading the Bible yesterday and I thought that Pauls letter to the Hebrews addresses this subject better than anyhting I have yet read. Particularly chapter 9.
It seems from this (I think you have to read the whole letter to get it all) that God gave the old covenant to man (law of moses) with it’s “man-made” temple and “carnal ordinances” becuase that was all that man was ready for. Jesus came in fulfillment of the Law bringing a new covenant. The new covenant has Jesus as it’s temple and high priest. Thus there is no need for the old ordinances or temple buildings or high priest as described in the Old testament. The veil was rent so that there is no barrier between man and God. Man may now directly worship God in the “temple” and be in his “presence” (not restricted to high priest in holy of holies) always. (I see this as taking place in the eucharist)
I take from this that the role of the Temple is to provide a place on earth for God to dwell in and a place where sins are forgiven. This certainly then reinforces my own belief that the eucharist is the Temple of the “new” covenant.
