I read recently that the Catholic church considers role playing like Dungeons and Dragons to be sinful. Does anyone know if that is true? If it is, then why? Does it apply only to D&D or to all role playing games along those lines? I ask because as a kid I played and still have the books.
I appreciate any (name removed by moderator)ut.

Thank you and God Bless

No it’s not. Such games are not even mentioned in the Catechism.

P.S.

To those who might say otherwise, you won’t find it. Don’t waste people’s time trying to convince them of seeing sins where there are none.

Sounds like your fine, I have never heard that it is a Sin. If your whole life revolved around the game that would be a different situation.

It seems to me that online role-playing games can be and often are sinful, not due to the magic, but, in the same nature as drug addiction, they often suck one’s soul out, proverbially, in people that I have known to play them, as the game becomes all-consuming and they play it eight hours or more a day, eight hours or more at a stretch, and neglect life and God because of it.

Log on to a “Warcraft” server and you’ll see it - single levels called “dungeons” often take an hour to organize, and three hours to complete, and must be finished once started. (At least that’s how it was explained to me by an acquaintance who was a maniac about the game.)

But, as far as the game itself being a sin, I have played strategy games that place one in ancient Rome (and thus before Christianity, and erecting pagan temples in-game), and Magic cards, and I don’t believe them to have been a sin, as long as one doesn’t get carried away with them, which the online RPGs seem to have a great proclivity to doing.

All right, I’ll be the first one to say it. Even if it’s not intrinsically evil, pretending you are some kind of witch or wizard, pretending you are killing people with magic, etc. could be a spiritually unhealthy pastime. We need to seek to enfuse every aspect of our lives with Christ, and I’m not sure whether these kinds of role playing games are compatible with that goal.

Thanks everyone.
I was given a little book, ‘examination of conscience’ that specifically pointed out D&D.
So it’s if you let it overcome your life that it becomes sinful.

I have a hard enough time avoiding the sins that are mentioned. I don’t need to be coming up with new ones.

I’ll get this info in the afternoon after work.

Perhaps I misread it…the book is one of those little pocket books, not too many pages.

The book info is as follows:
An Examination of Conscience: A preparation for the Sacrament of Penance
Text By: Fr. Robert Altier
Nihil Obstat: Richard J. Schuler (Censor Deputatus)
Imprimatur: Harry J. Flynn, D.D. (Archbishop of St. Paul and Minneapolis)
Copyright 2002 by Leaflet Missal Co.

On page 22 under the section for Venial Sins, subsection of examining the First Commandment it lists, as sins,
-putting other things or people before God
-not trusting God
-being angry at God
-Playing Dungeons and Dragons or similar games

They werent in that order but I put up a few other examples from the same list.

I fail to see what’s so wrong about pretending to be somebody who can bend the laws of reality to my own whim unless you personally have issues with the nice, sweet power trip that comes with being a spell-caster. Even if that were the case, you’d have beef with science-fiction and not to mention super hero comics where there are plenty of characters who are just like that.

P.S.

Killing people isn’t a sin. Murder is. There’s a difference.

I don’t know about you, but I’m not afraid to a waste a whole bunch of bloodthirsty bandits who want my money or fanatical crusaders who want my head.

You aren’t doing anything gravely immoral in-game like torturing prisoners you take right?

I personally don’t see what’s wrong with go into a kobold den and dealing with the kobolds who have been attacking the nearby town and enslaving people.
