Is this truly ground breaking? Pope Benedict and Patriarch Bartholomew I celebrating the Mass of the Vespers. Just happened to witness this on EWTN.

Vespers is evening prayer. This type of thing has happened several times.

Vespers isn’t mass. It’s evening prayer. Roman vespers are very similar to Eastern vespers.

Mass is the wrong term for Orthodox liturgies, as well.

It’s a nice sign, but since neither side says vespers are restricted… even laymen can lead them… it’s a very small step.

That the EP has previously let the Pope sit in choir during the Divine Liturgy (the equivalent to the Mass) is the far stronger sign. (It’s also gotten Moscow up in a huff.)

Pope Benedict knows who his real friends are. Unlike most of his liberal Bishops. Pope John Paul II was also very friendly with the Orthodox as well.

**What do you mean by “Mass of the Vespers?”

One might have been present “in choir” while the other celebrated Vespers, or the Eucharistic Liturgy, but there was no concelebration in either.**

Thank you all for your responses. I really need to look into this more. Any recommendations on books or websites?

There are occasions when Vespers is combined with the Divine Liturgy, such as Christmas, Theophany, Holy Thursday and Holy Saturday evenings, but this was not one of those occasions.

I dont know if this might help…but there are three websites from the Orthodox perspective: myocn.net, **goarch.org **or you are welcome to visit my parish website **st.demetrios.org **

🙂
Shlom Lekh Barbie,

That’s a beautiful temple, Barbie. If I’m ever in Fort Lauderdale, I would love to visit St. Demetrios. I recently had the blessed opportunity to attend an Antiochian Orthodox Church for Divine Liturgy in Naples. I don’t know if you’ve been there, but it’s beautiful. The iconostasis looks classical Greek.

Alloho minokhoun,
Andrew

You are welcome to join us via the web…our Divine Liturgy is online LIVE every Sunday (not sure what time zone you are in) or in our archives through out the week. My church has shaken things up this year. We have adult and children’s Bible Study prior to our DL…then we all come back for the DL together. OPA! Barbie

Are you talking about Naples Italy or Naples Florida USA 😃
