Hello everyone,
There came a new priest in our neighborhood and he’s helping me to improve my Latin in his spare times for free. In return, I want to give him a christmass gift these two set of books:

**Liturgia Horarum **by James Socias (ed.) [set of 6 volumes]
Publisher: Midwest Theological Forum (2010)
ISBN-10: 1936045265
Amazon.com link:
amazon.com/gp/product/1936045265?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=ox_sc_act_title_1&smid=A1TPDIPA49AF50

Roman Breviary Leather Bound – 2014 [set of 3 volumes]
Publisher: Baronius Press; 2nd edition (2014)
ISBN-10: 1905574460
Amazon.com link:
amazon.com/gp/product/1905574460?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=ox_sc_act_title_2&smid=A2M2WY4I92CMAI

So my question is this:
Can they be usefull for a priest in anyhow? And are these 2 books authentic, i mean 100% accurate to use in daily/weekly prayers? And lastly, are these two books same or not? What are the differences if they’re not?

Thank you, I dont know much about this ritualy books but I think they might be an excelent gift, what do you guys think?

Have a nice day.

Yes and no.

Yes in the sense that they are both the official prayer of the Church, the Divine Office according to the Roman Rite. As such, and definitely since 2007, either edition can be used to fulfill a diocesan priest’s obligation to pray the Office. They are both authentic and official (i.e. the Latin text; for the Baronius, the English is only an aid; it is not to be used for official prayer).

But no, in that both are different editions. The Baronius edition is the Divine Office as it was in 1962, notably, with a one-week Psalter and a heavily loaded Proper of Saints. This is the Extraordinary Form of the Divine Office.

The Liturgia Horarum is the second Latin typical edition of the revised Liturgy of the Hours promulgated after the Second Vatican Council, and as such, is the Ordinary Form of the Divine Office for the Roman Rite.

That’s a thoughtful gift idea… but this is the kind of gift where you should consult the recipient. You don’t know what he already has, or is already used to using.

Prayerbooks and missals… people have personal preferences, even for stuff like cover color.

Years ago now, I got my mom a new missal for the new translation of the Ordinary Form. It had everything she could possibly like and want, and it was really useful because her current parish has barebones missals in the pew.

And yet it took her a long time to get used to it, because she didn’t pick it out herself from the available options. Now she is really attached to it, of course, but I should have asked her first and taken her shopping.

I have seven uncles who are priests. Needless to say, I do not have many cousins! Anyway, they get more books, rosaries, and crucifixes for Christmas than they know what to do with. What they really want are prayers said for them, perhaps Masses, too. If that does not seem “material” enough, my uncles are always wishing someone would give them a gift certificate to a Catholic book store or a store than sells the shirts priests wear since those shirts can be very expensive.

The books you chose were very thoughtful and lovely, but your priest probably has a set already. If he does not have family near him, why not also invite him to Christmas dinner? After all those Latin lessons, you must know him well.

Thank you very much everyone.
The thing is, I’m Muslim myself and I live in a Muslim country, he came from Italy here and there is no such thing as a ‘christian shop’ someone can buy some christian gifts. So i have to buy from some web sites abroad.

And I dont know much about liturgical clothes but I do think some better idea. Thank you very much again.
