“Roman Catholic Church” has never been the proper name of the Church referred to by Catholics when they refer to their Church. The name of the universal Church is simply “the Catholic Church.”
The term “Roman Catholic Church” is a recent invention (past few centuries) and you’ll most often see and hear it used in English-speaking countries. Funnily enough, Protestants, not Catholics, who favor something called the branch theory of the Church’s development are usually the ones you’ll catch referring to the Catholic Church as the Roman Catholic Church.

The sign in front of our Parish Church says “Roman Catholic Church” right on it. I think that Catholics have begun embracing the term as a way to demonstrate that the Church they attend is in full communion with the The Church in Rome.
My understanding is that there are other communities who have started using the term “catholic”, so this helps avoid confusion.

After HenryVIII split from the Church over his divorce from Catherine of Aragon. He called his schism the Anglican catholic church, and he coined the term Roman Catholic to show that his church was another Catholic church and not the heresy it was. Phillip the 2nd of Spain nearly invaded England over it, but didn’t. If he had, I wonder if Henrys schism would have held up. Pax Christi
