"ROMAN" Catholic Church

“Roman” Catholic Church refers to the Church in Rome, the very same one Paul addressed in his Letter to the Romans.

Virtually all other apostolically established churches consider themselves “catholic.”

Here is an example…nestorian.org/

The question revolves around the word “catholic.” While the Roman Church has adopted its use as a name after the schism of 1054, it previously refered to all apostolically established churches many of which still use the word in it’s original context.

This can be seen in the phrase of the Nicene creed, “One, Holy, Apostolic and Catholic Church,” which refered to all pre-schism churches as a whole, including (I believe) the monophysite churches. This is noted by the fact that the creed was written at a time when there were no schisms.

But as far as the Church in Rome is concerned, it’s official name is The Catholic Church, without the “Roman”.

So, let’s look at the word “catholic.” It is a compound word made up of two Greek words: Kata (throughout) and Holos (all). These words appear together in the Bible at Acts 9:31 (blueletterbible.org/cgi-bin/c.pl?book=Act&chapter=9&verse=31&version=KJV#31).

The bible references the churches “throughout all Judaea and Galilee and Samaria” which refers primarily to these particular churches. Noteworthy here is that Rome is not included in the list. However, Rome is addressed as a church by Paul in his Letter to the Romans, so there is an association.

The first written use of the word “Catholic” is by Ignatius, a bishop of Antioch and disciple of John, in his Letter to the Smyrnaeans (newadvent.org/fathers/0109.htm). The letter was written ca. 109ad.

Here is the phrase that he uses. Quote, “wherever Jesus Christ is, there is the Catholic Church.” (Chap. 8)

We see Ignatius associating the word “catholic” with Christ, paraphrasing in reverse Jesus’ words “For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.”
(Mt 18:20)

The word “catholic” here refers to everyone in association with Christ as indicated through the paraphrase. Add the fact that Ignatius was Antiochan and not Roman and we can see that the word goes beyond Rome. More evident is that the letter was addressed to the Smyrnaeans, not the Romans, and this church is now included in the definition.

Ignatius does also write a letter to the Romans (newadvent.org/fathers/0107.htm) addressing them as a church.

But the word continues it’s meaning beyond just location. If we inspect the apostolic, i.e. “Catholic” churches, we see many similarities: Bishops; a valid Eucharist; the priesthood & deacons; apostolic succession; similar sacraments; use of christian art; liturgies; et al.

Add to this the many admonishions of the New Testament letters to “beware of false teachers” and something else emerges. In fact, if we add the seven letters of Ignatius which carry many admonishions, it simply adds to the point.

The point of the admonishions is to maintain the same faith among all churches. Repeatedly the churches addressed in the letters are told to maintain the faith that was taught to them by Paul and the other Apostles and reject those who do not teach the same gospel.

Virtually all the churches addressed in the letters are included in the list I previously cited in Acts 9:31. And they ALL practice the same faith.

So, beyond “location,” the meaning of the word “catholic” includes the same faith as established by the the Apostles.

Isn’t this pointedly denied by the post-reformation churches?

Don’t I know it, sometimes it keeps me up at night. And not because I’m concerned about what God will say regarding my submission to Rome. My first concern is what my answer will be when He asks me, “Did you feed my sheep?”
I’d be more worried about Him asking you “What did you feed them? My Truth, or your own distortions?”
I truly appreciate the invitation. For now I must be considered a conscientious objector. I cannot in good conscience join my self to Rome. Understand, I do NOT object to Rome as a whole and I certainly do not reject her as she rejects me.
The Catholic Church does not reject anyone. It’s open to anyone seeking the truth, that’s one of the meanings of the word “Catholic”. If you have been “put off” Catholicism by the rudeness or uncharitableness of some Catholics, please know that theuir sins do not represent the essence of the Catholic Church.
Maybe this really would be better treated in another thread. I’ll be happy to play if someone wants to start one.
Peace,
+N
The procedure here is that if you want a question answered, YOU start a thread with that question.

I’m American and always have said 'I’m Roman Catholic".
Unfortunately you’ve been affected by the anti-Catholic culture which has become so ingrained in the USA’s collective way of speaking and thinking that sometimes even many Catholics are unaware of it, and how it subtly influences even the way they think and speak about themselves and their Church.

Sorry that’s a bit of a mouthful, but think about it. Growing up in and living in a culture which for generations has been dominated by protestantism, and mainly by extreme anti-Catholic strains of protestantism, it’s easy for Catholics to think of their Church in the way that Protestants picture it, or how protestants think a church should be. I guess it’s easier for an outsider to see. (Here in Aus we have a culture which is passively-aggressive /dismissive of all religion, which presents a different set of problems.)

It’s not only in naming your church by a name which makes more sense to protestants, it’s visible in things like a tendency to go along with protestant versus Catholic interpretations of Bible passages, a tendency to downplay things which aren’t seen as explicit in the Bible, attitudes to the State, etc. Note I’m certainly not suggesting that all or any such things are obvious in most US Catholics, they are just overall cultural tendencies.

The Roman Catholic Church or Catholic Church (see terminology below) is the Christian church in full communion with the Bishop of Rome, currently Pope Benedict XVI. It traces its origins to the original Christian community founded by Jesus Christ and spread by the Twelve Apostles, in particular Saint Peter.

The problem herein lies that the RC has practices today that were not of the early church. This is why the Reformation took place, to correct or discard those unbiblical practices.

I’m curious as to how you define ‘unbiblical’?

By ‘unbiblical’ do you mean extra-biblical or anti-biblical?

There is nothing taught by the Catholic Church which is anti-biblical. However, there is much in the deposit of faith which is extra-biblical. The canon of scripture is one example.

And the Vatican copyrighted the term “Catholic”?

I don’t know about those groups I listed but of course the Orthodox Church is THE church from whom you went into schism so I guess they most of all could refer to themselves as the “Catholic Church”. Hey…maybe it is the RCC that is infringing on a heavenly patent 😉

The Vatican may not have copyrighted the term, but odds are that if you went on the street or got on the telephone and randomly asked a million people, five million, whatever, who the head of the Catholic Church is and where he resides - I bet the vast, vast majority would say Pope Benedict and Rome!

Thanks but I do not intend to let Wikipedia, or any other publication which has no status or authority at all within the Catholic Church, tell me what name to call the Catholic Church.

Yes…Wikipedia is an interesting and helpful tool but notorioulsy biased to whatever group happens to take an interest in a particular category. So you have to take it with a grain of salt in some cases.

I am continually amazed at how many people quote wikipedia as an authority on everything. Not too long agl one of its editors was outed for being a phony.

The Head of the Catholic Church is Jesus Christ. B16 is the visible head on earth of the Catholic Church. The bishops of Rome (i.e. Popes) have several times in the past been forced to reside a long way from Rome. eg Avignon, Venice. (We did not then become “Avignonian Catholics” or “Venetian Catholics” re remained just “Catholics” in “the Catholic Church”.) If the present aggressively anti-Christian course of the Italian and EU leadership continues, the popes may very well be forced to flee Rome again in the not-too-distant future.

Did you read the rest of the posts? There was no argument about whether or not Jesus is the head of the Church. The thread regarded whether or not the Church whose visible head is in Rome and goes by the name of Benedict has the right to be called the ‘Catholic Church’ in light of the fact that there are various factions who also consider themselves catholic or Catholic.

Yes in fact IIRC he was some bored teenager who passed himself off as a highly-educated Catholic theologian and they blindly accepted vast reams of stuff he wrote about Catholicism.

Sorry about the “Head” nitpick, I wasn’t having a go at you, I just thought it better say something before one of our resident antiCatholics jumped in with “aha! So your Church is NOT the Body of Christ, you just follow some sinful man in Rome!”

Yes, we must be ever watchful 🙂

And I am constantly annoyed when people think we think it is the authority on everything.

My point was: The Roman Catholic Church or Catholic Church (see terminology below) is the Christian church in full communion with the Bishop of Rome, currently Pope Benedict XVI.

In bolded, it’s ONE and THE SAME THING. And this is how I grew up on it - that RCC and CC is one and the SAME THING.😛

I gotta tell ya - I’m glad youse guys left me out of the shooting match.

I totally agree that the RCC and the CC are the same thing. I just don’t understand why you got so upset with my comment about wikipedia. There are many good Church sources to quote from (after all we are a Catholic forum) and I don’t understand why people (you, in this case) go to wikipedia to get information or as proof for an argument. As far as people thinking you think it is “the authority on everything” - you’re the one who quoted from it. What else are we to believe?
