Hello,

I was born and raised Catholic for the past 27 years. I studied in a Catholic school when I was in pre-school, grade school and highschool. I’ve been involved in a Catholic Charismatic community for the past 8 years and it seemed that my knowledge about being Catholic became stagnant. I know that God works individually in our lives and has a special unique mission for us. Moreover, I would like to have an in depth knowledge and understanding about the history of my faith and live out the teachings of Christ.

I’ve heard about the canon law, mosaic law, Vatican II council, Council of Trent, Holy See, etc. but I really don’t understand them. Do I need to take religious studies or theology courses for me to fully understand my faith?

Maybe you can share with me legit references for Catholic teachings. ☺️

Thanks and God bless!

Code:
                        Colossians 2:2..
…and attaining to all the wealth that comes from the full assurance of understanding, resulting in a true knowledge of God’s mystery, that is, Christ Himself, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. I tell you this so that no one may deceive you by fine-sounding arguments

Knowledge is one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit (see Isa. 11:2). The problem is, divorced from love and humility before God, it can become a source of pride. the following quote from St. Robert Bellarmine, one of the most knowledgeable men of his time,(it’s in his book, The Mind’s Ascent to God).
“Let prayer delight thee more than disputations, and the love which buildeth up more than the knowledge which puffeth up.”

If you are studying theology, sure! However, it sounds like you simply want to know your faith. EWTN. Catholic radio. Listen to it constantly, while tuning out the secular media. You will be far better off, filled with peace and no longer bothered or disturbed by the concocted “noise” of the surrounding media.

I find it hard to navigate but you will find a lot of resources on vatican.va.

It sounds like you are looking for a starting point, which can be overwhelming considering the 2000 year history of the Church. Is there a specific area of teaching that you want to learn about, like the sacraments, the doctrines, the Bible, or are you looking for something like a “general overview” so from there you can branch out to other areas?

Thank you for this. Yes, actually the influence of the secular media adds to the confusion with what the Church actually teaches.

Thanks for bringing this up. I think what im looking for is more about the doctrines of the Church. Coz I think everything is connected to it.

I would start with a really digestible book like Catholic Answers author Trent Horn’s book Why We’re Catholic.

It’s a little over 200 pages and breaks down the major doctrines of the Church in short 10-page or so chapters. Then you can use the cited references to learn more about each area.

The first link is to the Catechism of the Catholic Church which contains the teachings of the Church with footnotes referencing what underpins the teaching.

The second link is also the Catechism of the Catholic Church but done in a question and answer format.

It’s a good idea to have one of these on your shelf.

https://www.amazon.com/Catechism-Ca...=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1529498733&sr=1-1

Also available online at the Holy See website, but I find the online version satisfactory when I know exactly what I’m looking for—for example, when I want to post a link in a comments thread here at CAF. For browsing, when one question can lead to another to clarify your own ideas, a printed book is more useful.

Thanks for recommending. I should look out and find this one in a bookstore.

I love podcasts.

Listen to them constantly, in the car, while cutting grass, while cooking and cleaning, etc…

My top picks are…

Called to Communion
Catholic Answers Live
Open Line Monday

My second favorite is audio books, plenty available from this site.

Also, audio down loads from Bible Christian Society are excellent.

Hope these help,

God Bless
