Many times the POpes in ecyclicals and other writings refer to the “The One holy Catholic Roman Church”, and things like that.
While this is sort of a common usage it is incorrect. People are members of particular Churches, not rites. Particular Churches are members of the rites.I’m Latin Rite Catholic or Catholic…Latin Rite.![]()
As opposed to the “Anglican Catholic” Church? Makes sense. Here in the UK, the sign outside of my local Catholic Church alongside the mass times proclaims that it is a “Roman Catholic” Church, so I don’t see what you mean by the term not being in use at all.
So you’re saying I need to change my profile under “religion”?While this is sort of a common usage it is incorrect. People are members of particular Churches, not rites. Particular Churches are members of the rites.
Each particual Church has its own heirarchy and is in communion with the Holy Father in Rome.
For a member of the Latin Catholic Church their diocesen bishop is their heirarch and the Pope is the head of their Church.
For a member of the Byzantine Ruthenian Catholic Church their eparchal bishop is their heirarch and the Metropolitian Archbishop of Pittsburgh is the head of their Church. The Metropolitian is in communion with the Pope who is the head of the universal Catholic Church (his other two offices, Head of the Latin Catholic Church and Bishop of Rome have no other meaning to an Eastern Catholic other than those are offices held by the Pope).
So right now I live in Tucson, AZ. The Latin Catholic Church has a Diocese here but as a Byzantine Ruthenian Catholic my bishop would be the bishop of the Holy Protection of Mary Byzantine Catholic Eparchy of Phoenix.
Just to muddy the waters for you though, my actual ordinary is my prior provincial because I am a religious brother and I do have to follow the Diocese of Tucson guidelines becuase I work in a ministry within that diocese. Even though the ministry is in the Eparchy as well, as we are a Latin religious order we work for the Latin Catholic Bishops. The ministry I work in is our Carmelite Catholic High School.
:sad_yes: Sort of. :sad_yes:So you’re saying I need to change my profile under “religion”?![]()
Scratch that post.I’m Latin Rite Catholic or Catholic…Latin Rite.![]()
Unfortunately they have another clue - all of us British who went out to great the Pope during his papal visit. Perhaps that was a motive behind the invite, to draw is out into the open.Well, you are in England. They have to make sure they know where we heathenous papists dwell so they can execute us![]()
Personally, I’m not bothered. I just try to listen to the church (NOT accusing anybody here) so I know what to and what not to do. It’s just me.Visiting in strange (unfamiliar) towns and cities, if one hope to find a Catholic Church, Latin rite, even the phone book can provide assistance by listing: Roman Catholic Churches. I can’t understand why this title bothers anybody …
I like that! I’ll have to tell my wife (she’s part Norwegian) that one.I find this a bit confusing. How many kinds of catholics (eastern, western, roman, traditional, byzantine and so on) are there?
Edit: would it be better if i said: Papal friendly Norwegian Catholic or Norwegian Catholic instead of Roman Catholic?
For me, more to the point is that a number of Churches in this huge country, call themselves “Catholic” but are not Catholic. A few that come to mind: Old Polish Catholic Church, Catholic Apostolic Church, Lutheran Catholic Church, etc., am dragging these titles from memory over 50 years of travel in the USA. Why bother with the fakes? So I look for Roman Catholic churches.**I find this a bit confusing. I wonder how the real Anglican Catholics, those who would reunite with Rome, will call themselves? As opposed to the “Anglican Catholic” Church? Makes sense.
Maybe the answer is in your question: Anglican Catholics. Has a nice ring to it.I wonder how the real Anglican Catholics, those who would reunite with Rome, will call themselves?
