Roman Catholics and Episcopalians come together to Pray Evensong

The meeting of Pope Francis and Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby inspired clergy in Tennessee to carry on their example of praying together.

So on Sunday, members of both the Episcopal diocese and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Nashville will come together at 5 p.m. for an ecumenical evensong at St. George’s. An evensong is an evening prayer service similar to the vespers service in the Roman Catholic tradition. A barbecue reception to raise money for children in foster care will follow.

“We want to press in to common prayer together and common mission together,” Wilson said. “Culturally, there’s a lot of polarization, a lot of division politically and otherwise, and we see this as a real opportunity for the church to model maybe a better way, to model healthier posture of reconciliation amidst differences.”

And if I can remember Evensong is strictly a prayer service, there is no Holy Communion.

It is a beautiful and peaceful prayer service and our country and our world is in need
of much prayer so this can only be a good thing.

It is sung Vespers/Evening Prayer, and it is indeed a peaceful prayer service. Anglican choirs sang it in St Peter’s Rome. RCC Bishops attended it at Canterbury Cathedral. There is nothing like it in beauty and serenity.

I agree. I remember when they had the Evensong service in Rome.

How very say. Bishop Choby, who wanted to be present at Evensong, was not able to because of his illness. And he died on Sunday night.
