Roman Catholics/Orthodox Christians and non-Catholic/Orthodox music

Is it frowned upon by your respective authorities to listen to non-approved religious music (not for worship/Liturgy, just personal time)?

The OC seems more traditional when it comes to what is and is not allowed in terms of music and well, everything. And it appears the RCC doesn’t disapprove of guitars and instruments, per se.

Still trying to decide which Church to convert to and I just want to know what I should expect when it comes to listening to religious music (e.g., Gospels, hymns, contemporary Christian music).
 
I’ve never heard of any issues in the Orthodox Church with listening to non-Orthodox music.
We don’t like instruments in the Liturgy, but outside you’ll find many Orthodox music lovers.
 
In Orthodoxy we live by a mantra, “ask the priest.” If you have doubts about something, ask your priest.

There is no general blanket statement to say don’t listen to a specific artist or genre. But one should be able to identify if any music is harmful to one’s soul. And if you are unsure, ask your priest 😉

As with most things in Orthodoxy, it is a case-by-case basis. Although I personally think that some music ought to be avoided, the Orthodox Church does not rule on such matters.

I couldn’t belong to a church that forbid contemporary Christian music as I find it to be quite uplifting to my spiritual needs.
