Okay…just a little humor here after the endless deabtes about “Don’t call me a Roman Catholic as we are the Catholic Church…Roman is a pejorative term used by the Protestants to oppress and demean the true church and yada…yada”.

Here off the link on this forum for the Catholic World News Service is a featured item they are selling…

An office “RC” hat:

*This 100% brushed cotton twill cap is green with white embroidery. It sports the distinctive “RC” Roman Catholic logo. *

Quick someone write Catholic World News Service and let them know that they are selling merchandise designed to oppress the Catholic Church by particpating in its own demeanization by Protestants :rotfl:

That was too cool 👍

I don’t have a problem with the name, “Roman Catholic” 🤷

But what do I know?

God bless

“Roman” has indeed been used as a pejorative term by some anti-Catholics just as Yankee Doodle was sung by British troops to make fun of Americans during the Revolutionary War. In both cases, the peoples being mocked turned the tables on their detractors and now wear those titles as badges of honor.

Hey Rev;

The problem lies in the use of the term when the non-Catholic poster is attempting claim “catholic” for the church to which he or she is a member of: there’s the rub. Or when a new recruit for Orthodoxy claims that “Rome” hijacked the Church that Christ founded.

That’s when the rankles rise and the dander is up.

We are Roman (overwhelmingly so) in America. Some old timers and sans coulottes like to throw “Latin Rite” Catholic around.

We are the Church that Christ founded for ALL mankind. My parish pastor is from Vietnam, the parochial vicar is from Puerto Rico, many active members are from points north, south, east and west of these continental United States.

We are Catholic. And we’re roamin’

wow–that would be GREAT for St. Patrick’s Day! I have a t-shirt that says ‘I may not be Irish but…’ and this would be perfect to finish the sentence!

Another reason not to use the term “Roman Catholic” when referring to the entire Catholic Church (not just the Latin Rite) is that (in my experience) Eastern Catholics can get a bit rankled when they’re erroneously called “Roman”.

Good Doc!

That stuff’s funny! I liked the JP-Great logo stuff there.

I guess my take on this was just from knowing something of the 1830s-1850s American Know-Nothing movement, and similar times when the Catholic Church was demonized as “Roman”. . . as if that particular city in Italy is bent on horrible plans, oppressions of freedoms, etc.

It’s a kind of national chauvinism that worked for the time, I think, but comes across as intellectually flimsy today.

Hope you’re doing well. All the best,🙂
