The Roman Catholic Archbishop of Kingston, the Most Reverend Kenneth D Richards, has signalled the willingness of his church to care for babies born with microcephaly.
The offer comes amid suggestions that abortion should be an option for women carrying babies suspected of having the condition.

Richards says Jamaica must preserve its humanity and not succumb to the easy way out of the current crisis associated with the Zika virus.

This Archbishop is teaching the Gospels more beautifully and profoundly than any sermon ever could.

I think the termination of a child in the womb is most often performed if it is unwanted, unloved, and inconvenient. Many women, mothers to be, who might be carrying a diseased child might actually love it and the thought of destroying it would horrify them. They are just assuming every woman carrying a child with something wrong with it should immediately have it destroyed.

I wish you were right. But in the UK, over 90% of Down’s Syndrome babies are aborted. It’s why Ireland has one of the highest numbers of Down’s Syndrome people. One thing Ireland does right is how joyfully accepting it is of Down’s Syndrome people (for now anyway).

When I was visiting Sean Ross Abbey I asked the Sisters, who ran a school for mentally disabled children, why we had such a high incidence of this kind of disability.

They said that when babies were taken to the US (ie born to unmarried mothers) they sometimes returned to their old homes and married close relatives thereby increasing the risk of genetic problems

It was only much later I learned that the Sisters had been ones to sell babies to the US when they ran a home… See the Philomena film…

Have you been to Kilarney? Opposite the Cathedral, the Golden Gates into the National Parlk lead to Dineen cottage, a cafe staffed by Downs young adults, They have bank accounts etc. .Excellent food too…

I never condone killing a helpless, defenseless child, especially with the violent, cruel methods they use. The only case where the child is thought of is if it is aborted if it has a disability. It is an act of sympathy, but false and wrong, I definitely know that. I can understand not wanting a child to have to be born and live through life with a horrible disability or disease, but it still just isn’t our right to take life which God has created and sewn into that child’s mother’s womb.
