"The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith has accepted as valid the repudiation of schism of a former Orthodox priest accomplished by the Superior-General of the Society of Saint Pius X (FSSPX /SSPX), Bp. Bernard Fellay. Cardinal Levada also reportedly informed that the priest would have been named a domestic prelate in recognition of his former rank in the Orthodox Church. (News provided by the Polish district of the SSPX, translated by Laodicea).’

Portent of things to soon come?

Yeah, I read that too. I found that weird. Someone in the comments posted a succinct statement of what I was thinking, which went something like:

“The CDF allows a not-in-communion bishop to bring a not-in-communion priest into full communion with the Roman Catholic Church and the Pope while coming into another organization that is not in communion.”

Okay, and they grant him (reportedly) prelatical status?

Lolololol. Whaaaat?

This is completely bogus, especially coming from Rorate Caeli, the SSPX news blog.

Do you not check your sources before posting here, Salt? Surely someone should inform Cardinal Levada that he allegedly did this, wouldn’t you think so? Not a single news piece can be found at the Vatican, Zenit, or anywhere in a google search, for that matter, other than this blog piece and its translation.

Rorate is not the SSPX news blog.
It reports on all elements of Traditional Catholicism including the FSSP, ICRSS, IBP, etc as well as the 'Reform of the Reform".
I am checking this source given with the Roman “Acta” and other authoritative sources.
I will get back.

This is still a private source, but I am working on finding an official one:

"In a letter of the 25th November 2011, Cardinal William Levada, prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, recognized the repudiation of schism (abjuration) made by archimandrite Athenagoras Bogoridi-Liven. The Orthodox dignitary made the act on the first Sunday of Advent before bishop Bernard Fellay, the general superior of the SSPX, in the Benedictine abbey of Bellaigue (Auvergne). In his letter the cardinal prefect recognized the ecclesiastical dignity of Fr Bogoridi-Liven, naming him praelatus domesticus, a domestic prelate of His Holiness.

Monsignor Bogoridi-Liven is 38. He was born in Bulgaria, but his family have Greco-Russian roots (his paternal grandfather was of a Greek aristocratic family, and his grandmother came from the Russian aristocracy). On reaching the age of majority he entered a monastery on Mount Athos, but finally took holy orders in the Greek Orthodox Church and not long afterwards received the title of archimandrite. As a scholar he specialises in liturgy; he is a distinguished scholar not just of the eastern rites, but also of the Roman rite; at the Moscow Theological Academy he defended a doctoral thesis on the reforms of the latter. He knows several languages.

Monsignor Bogoridi-Liven is currently staying at the Benedictine monastery of Our Lady in Bellaiague, which is connected to the SSPX. He came there in August of last year, asking its prior, Dom Placide, to receive him into the bosom of the universal Church."

This reminds me of that rumor about a nun transferring to an SSPX order. The statement was quickly removed from the website that had the notice.

Sirach, I understand Rorate Caeli may not be your cup of tea, but it is actually a GREAT blog - very well written and thought out. It’s one of the best traditional blogs out there. I don’t know how you feel about Father Z, but Father Z is a pretty balanced traditional type of priest, who doesn’t always side with traditionalists, and he quotes often from it.

Rorate Caeli is a traditional blog, but that doesn’t make it bad.

And it is not an SSPX blog.

TL, I do not have a problem with Rorate, but many people know that they customarily report on SSPX activities, so I was not speaking amiss. Simply google Rorate Caeli SSPX, and you’ll see 14 pages of their articles. One could easily believe they have a strong bias toward the Society.

As such, the article cites no official word from “the horse’s mouth” - Cardinal Levada of the CDWDS or the Vatican news sources. It should not be posted until the matter is clearly stated by the Church, rather than the SSPX.

My priest uncle knows that nun in New Zealand personally and she did transfer to an FSSPX affiliated order with permission from the Holy See.

Interesting.

I don’t think anyone should be surprised or alarmed because the SSPX status, as we all know, is “highly irregular”. When things are highly irregular, all sorts of things can happen. And we are not privy to any private conversations, so things happen.

Apart from the SSPX angle, is “Orthodox priest converts” big enough news for a press release from the Vatican?

I didn’t see a smiley face or wink, but I have to assume you meant this as a joke…

"Rorate Caeli has reported that on May 28, 2011 Father Daniel Couture, the Society’s District Superior of Asia , was delegated by Bishop Fellay to accept the vows of Mother Mary Micaela, who has transferred from the Congregation of the Dominican Sisters of New Zealand, a Novus Ordo congregation, to the Dominican Sisters of Wanganui, established by Bishop Fellay. The report notes that Mother Mary “had special permission from the Congregation for Religious and Secular Institutes in Rome to do this.”

SSPX haters, you should begin to understand that the relationship between the SSPX and the Holy See is far more complex than you imagine.

Things happen that are not reported on, because not everything must be made public. The SSPX and the Holy See are in communication on many different levels and, just because there is an apparent impasse at one level, does not mean that there is a lack of cooperation at different levels.

It is hardly in the interest of the Holy See to publicly comment on situations that will only cause criticism and grief from ignorant and spiteful persons if widely broadcast. That does not mean that these situations have not occurred.

wss
Very observant remark and a breath of fresh air on the ant-FSSPX blogosphere.
I just wish the discussions betwixt the Holy See and the Socirty where a little more transparent.
The common layman in the pews at FSSPX Mass have no idea what is transpiring as so far as the Society being regularised/suspensions lifted/absolution and marriage acknowledged as valid.
So I pray.

Uh oh, the status quo CAF mantra re: the society doesn’t seem to be holding up these days. I can’t say I’m surprised - the minute I read this I knew I’d have to come here to witness the uncomfortable squirming.

Old Salt, you can’t win - buckets of bloody chum seem to follow you no matter what!

Anyway, wonderful news. Deo gratias!

While he’s been accepted, does he have faculties recognized by the Vatican? AFAIK bishops and priests of SSPX, while not in schism, do not have faculties.

Not that I don’t acknowledge what you’re saying as true, but why would the Church receive into communion an Orthodox priest into the SSPX, and grant him honorary prelatical status (I suppose one of the titles granting the style “monsignor”) if they also didn’t grant him faculties? Even that would be hypocritical, though, as he would be in a still-supposedly not-in-communion group of clergy.
