It seems to me that it is not charitable to suggest that someone did not read the post they are responding to simply because they do not agree with the implications of what was written. Sure, conditions at the time of the Union of Brest were not ideal. Motivations were mixed and the attitude of the Ukrainian bishops towards Rome was imperfect.Aelred Minor, I get the impression that you’re not really reading what Alex is saying about the Union of Brest.
My point is that in approaching the issue of the orthodoxy of one’s fellow Catholics (ones in the Church today), one should at first assume good faith on their part until such time as they clearly contradict that assumption. No adult is a practicing Catholic because their ancestors decided to become Catholics centuries ago (whether for perfect or imperfect reasons). They are a practicing Catholic because they choose to maintain their full membership in the Catholic Church, which includes of course their full submission to the Roman Pontiff and communion with him.
Thus, when someone asks why Eastern Catholics are even in communion with Rome, my resonse is along the lines of “presumably because they believe in Catholicism and therefore wish to be a part of the Catholic Church.”
