With what result. How do you apply scripture you read

I don’t sit around reading and applying scripture to myself.

But any sort of self-mortification like fasting would do this.
Also, keeping one’s body pure by avoiding sins of the flesh would also do this.

Christianity is a Mystical, Bloody Religion of faith & self-sacrificing love
for others. We are called to give out / use ourselves up for the true
good of others, especially on behalf of their salvation

I think St Paul is contrasting here the Christian view of the body as opposed to the view of the pagans of his time. Purity and chastity were not pagan values.
