Reads from the DR For he that is dead is justified from sin.

I understand this to mean that because we are baptized in Jesus’ death and resurrection we are freed from sin including original sin, and the punishment connected with sin. Being baptized as a baby I can still sin and lose justification and that is why we have reconciliation.

She tells me that if original sin is washed away in Baptism I would be perfect and unable to sin. But I say by being human there is still concupiscence

My JW friend is telling me that verse 7 applies to natural death that will happen at the end of life. That we are justified from all sin and the punishment that goes with sin. I don’t think that this verse has anything to do with natural life but spiritual life. I think that she is just picking out this one verse without considering what came before it.

Am I close to what the Church teaches or is she right?

Thanks

This is explained in the next paragraph in 10 & 11.
When he(Jesus) died , he died, once for all, to sin, so his life now is life with God; and in that way, you too must consider yourselves to be dead to sin but alive for God in Christ Jesus.
So “when a man dies” refers to the way Christ died to sin.
And “he is finished with sin” refers to being alive for God.

The verse needs to be read in the light of the whole context in which it was written and not just interpreted by single lines.

Few are the souls that never loose their baptismal innocence. Thank you, Jesus, for reconciliation. Better to do hidden penances offered to Jesus and Mary for her conversion, just sayin.

Hi!
…for clear cut understanding on what the Church Teaches you should refer to the Catechism (its on-line @ Vatican & newadvent.org); the JW are wrong in so many levels… they (as other non-Catholic Christians) suffer from the “rush” and hail Mary’s–that is, they grab something and run with it (always claiming that they use Scriptures to very/proof Scriptures–problem with that is that is only partially right: they use concurrence–passages that speak on the very same context–while ignoring everything else…

Here’s what the Apostle Taught about sin:
8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us. (1 St. John 1:8-10)
14 Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven. 16 Therefore **confess your sins **to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. (St. James 5:14-16a)
Clearly, the Apostles are not subscribing to some sort of blanket forgiveness of sin–they actually command that the Believers confess their sins–to do otherwise is tantamount to making God a liar!

…and how did they come to such conclusion, who or better yet Who filled their heads with such understanding?:
21 Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” 22 And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 **If you forgive **anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; **if you do not forgive **them, they are not forgiven.” (St. John 20:21-23)
Christ did not Teach “once saved” or “once justified” go sin some more!

Maran atha!
