Rome excommunicates four Ukrainian bishops

I thought that was old news.

They are just vagantes attached to their latinizations. Perhaps I am wrong but I thought Major-Metropolitan Cardinal Husar had already dealt with them before he retired.

Forgive me but if they appointed themselves, then they are not really bishops, are they?

I would be interested in hearing if they were validly ordained as bishops. Regardless one cannot appoint himself bishop of any see. These kinds of vagrant bishops and priests have always existed in the Church, which is why one must be very careful in researching any group before becoming involved with it. They are justly excommunicated, and I sincerely hope they receive no quarter in any apostolic church.

Just for grins: westernorthodox.blogspot.com/2006/10/10-signs-your-bishop-is-vagante.html

So they were excommunciated for being attached to their latinizations?
Not at all. They were excommunicated for condemning different bishops and teachings of the Catholic Church as well as spreading their errors to others, while causing confusion among the UGCC faithful. Not to mention setting up their own “church” entitled the “Ukrainian Orthodox Greek-Catholic Church.”

I have forgotten who consecrated them, it might be from an SSPX bishop, if so, according to the Latin Catholic church the consecrations would be valid.

Don’t forget the unauthorized ordination.

Alex explained it well, I was not clear.

There are small splinter movements within the Byzantine-Slavonic Catholic community and I believe that this is largely fueled by a negative reaction to the church working toward restoring it’s traditions. Hence my comment (which perhaps I should not have made).

It is in disobedience to their hierarchs that they have been excommunicated, especially because they set up an unauthorized rival hierarchy and fomented schism. It should be noted that their lay following have not been particularly numerous.

I thought the UGCC had already excommunicated them once or twice, perhaps I have confused them with some others. 🤷

Dear Sir,

Yes, that was the Society of St Josaphat and one problem is that when our Patriarch does something, Rome doesn’t always agree. Such groups divide and confuse the faithful and that is grist enough for the excommunication mill. Those four “bishops,” I believe, were and are very much against the raising of Pope John Paul II to the honours of the altar as well.

Unfortunately, Rome seems to agree with previous actions undertaken by the EC Churches only when it itself becomes the focus of the attack and of the confusion sown.

Ah, that Rome . . . 😉

… The Vatican said that the Holy See “does not recognize the validity of their episcopal ordinations, or of any and all ordinations that have derived, or will derive therefrom.” The group has no right to use the term “Catholic,” the Vatican added. The statement cautioned the faithful against becoming involved with the clerics, who now identify themselves as the “Bishops of Pidhirci.”
The Vatican statement noted that excommunication of the four priests was pronounced in 2008, as the result of a sentence from the tribunal of the Ukrainian Catholic Church, which had found them guilty of “illegitimate usurpation of office, inciting sedition and hatred towards certain hierarchs, provoking subjects to disobedience, and harming a third party’s good name by calumny.” The Ukrainian Catholic Church is by far the largest of the Eastern churches in communion with Rome.
