The Abu Hafs al Masri Brigades who claimed the two London bombing attacks published a fresh warning Monday, July 25: “After London, it is Rome’s turn.” The Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi is warned that by failing to withdraw Italian troops from Iraq, he would by his own hand “turn Rome into a graveyard.”

The statement run on the Internet threatens the Italian capital with harsher and more painful strikes than the London attacks. “As long as a single Italian soldier remains in Iraq, you the prime minister can look forward to nothing but “more and more blood.”

I read this. Its very scary. I know there have been times when the Pope has not been based in the Vatican, but if this were ever to happen in our lifetimes, it would be quite a frightening thing.

We need alternate sources. Debka tends to be a very unreliable source.

Glad you clarified that. I wondered myself why I had not heard this anywhere else yet.

I have to disagree with that – they are an Israeli source and they do have a political POV, once you know that however, you can pretty well sort out what’s there.

From what I can gather the original threat was made Fri or Sat and then renewed Monday…

AKI the Italian newswire is apparently carrying the story

London, 22 July (AKI) - A new message has appeared on the Internet, purportedly from the Abu Hafs al-Masri Brigades, threatening the capitals of Italy, Holland and Denmark. The group, which has also claimed responsibility for the failed bombings in London on Thursday, said: “We therefore bless these attacks and also announce that the next will be terrible for the enemy of Allah and will ignite a bloody war against whoever offers support to the American infidels in the region.”

“The next words will be deep in the European capitals in Rome, and in Amsterdam and Denmark, who still have their armies in Iraq, under the authority of the Americans and British,” the statement said.

“We renew the message to Rome, to Berlusconi. The fact that the Italian troops remain in Iraq is nothing but digging their own grave, we will pull them out of their trenches with our own hands, the soldiers of Islam will not remain still. Instead, the next few days will be like we have promised and there will be hard strikes and in places you don’t expect and from us you only see blood as long as the Italian troops remain in Iraq,” the message continued.

The authenticity of this document is still to be verified, but it contains anomalies which make it slightly different from those issued in the last few days in the name of the group, which, earlier this year, called on its ‘sleeping cells’ to launch attacks in Europe.

The statement is dated wrongly, saying “Saturday 22 July 2005”, instead of Friday. The document also calls on Holland to withdraw its troops from Iraq, even though the 1,400-strong Dutch contingent left the country in March, despite Britain and America’s efforts to get them to stay.

Also, the statement was not posted on an independent internet site, as is customary for the Al-Masri Brigades, but published directly in a forum. This element also raises doubts over the authenticity of the message.

I’m wondering if those terrorists really mean to carry out the attack. we don’t have very detailed threats from terrorists before Sep 11th.
Axeman of New Orleans made a very detailed threat on March 13th 1919 of striking at 12:15 next Tuesday. but nothing happened.
these guys just love seeing how much control they have over the public.
but we have to prepare ourselves for it.

If they Bomb the Vatican should we bomb Mecca?
After all Allah lives their in their theology blowing up Mecca would destroy the faith of these nuts as they think Mecca is indestructable and literally where Allah resides on earth.

At some point enough is enough with these fruitcakes.

Dear friends

I think realistically every country can expect to be a victim of this terror. I’m not very politically savvy, but the signs going on in the world so far point to a systematic attack on the western world.

The Vatican has been outspoken in condemning these attacks as have many countries stood alongside those attacked and condemned these evil atrocities.

I think it is a high possibility that any country condemning the attacks does stand a real risk of being attacked. I think to place the blame firmly on the invasion in Iraq is short-sighted at best. Terror attacks took place prior to the invasion of Iraq.

I think now we will see more and more of these attacks. They are driven by such a hatred that they will not stop until they are stopped.

We must all remain vigilant and any drop in security in any country would be naive and wreckless.

The Vatican is realistically a target as is any other country, these fanatics won’t be deterred they are driven by hatred or more correctly they have learnt to hate.

In my honest opinion, no place is safe from this evil

God Bless you and much love and peace to you

Teresa

I don’t bias them for their POV, which we need to know for all news sources. I simply have seen that most of their stories don’t pan out to be true.

Does this thread seem a bit more scary after one of the London bombers was arrested in Rome?

Rome has long been known to be a likely target for terrorism. Our plane returning from Rome in 2000 (the Jubilee year) was delayed. A fellow passenger who worked at the U.S. Embassy said an intelligence report cited a threat against U.S. interests in Rome. Several months later, a tunnel was discovered that was under the U.S. Embassy grounds in Rome. But thwarted terrorism doesn’t mean the threat is eliminated.

And the fact that Rome is the Capital of Christendom (or rather the Vatican I mean), I really do fear for them now. I pray that nothing happens, but if it does, I can only imagine the consequences of making such a horrible strike to the center Christianity. 😦

I pray for the apprehension of these individuals before anything else happens… Not that it would be any less terrible anywhere else. But I just never imagined it happening at the Vatican until now… Of course, no one imagined someone ramming planes into skyscrapers would actually happen either.

We were planning a trip to Rome next summer, with this kind of threat (and you never know when or how long it will be before they attack, the true definition of terror), I don’t know how in all good conscience I could take 2 girls and a wife there…

I have a friend who has just returned this week - led 25 of his students and previous to that he spent four weeks there about two months ago. They had a glorious time both trips.

You can never know if and when an attack will come. London subway riders never dreamed — stockbrokers in NY never dreamed – nightclub goers in Bali never dreamed – teenagers in an Israeli pizza parlor never dreamed–. The pope was shot at his front door.

No matter where you go you simply cannot know in this time of terror for terror’s sake. You could stay at home and have something happen here.

Take your family, enjoy yourself and hope for the best. WYD is going on, tons of kids all gathered in one place together with the Pope – they are going – they read the papers too.

God be with them all.

Is the Vatican a Target for Terrorists?

VATICAN CITY — The Vatican is seen as the heart of the Christian world, but some also eye the international iconic symbol of Christianity as a terror target.

Having studied in Rome for a while, I can say that there is some reason for concern. Throughout my time there the university I was studying through passed along letters from the State Department that allows universities to judge the safety of their students. While I was there, there was one foiled attempt to poison the public water supply of Rome. It never hit the western media, but was still a scare in Rome. A different attack involved someone inserting syringe fulls of some drug into plastic water bottles. For about a week none of us could figure out why the waiters would turn the bottles of water we ordered upside down and squeeze them. Eventually we learned that they were showing us that no little streams of water squirted out. A couple people died in that attack.

Did I ever feel any less safe over there than being back in the US? No. Unfortunately terrorism can and will happen anywhere the terrorists think it will frighten us the most. The only answer is, be in a state of grace always. We can die any time, any way, and any where.
