Well, about that, Rome has been thinking for a while now about suppressing the Eastern Catholic Churches. Did you know that in the Eastern Code of Canon Law or the so called CCEO there is a provision about this? It clearly states that the Eastern Catholic Churches exist by the will of the Holy See, and that they can be suppressed anytime by the same authority. Basically, since the Popes created those churches, they also have the power to suppress them. It is a clear concept and principle of canon law (both latin and eastern codes) that the entity which can create a body, has also the authority to suppress it.
I think Rome, after Vatican II and Ecumenism becoming popular in the Church, has realized that the Eastern Catholic Churches have not realized their historic purpose of uniting their Orthodox sister Churches to Rome, so the Holy See now has engaged in ecumenism, and the presence of the Eastern Catholic Churches are hurting this dialogue of the Holy See with the Orthodox. Basically, bishops of the Eastern Catholic Churches range from those enthusiastic to the union with their Orthodox brethren, to those who are very latinized and still hold a grudge against the Orthodox. Even Rome itself has abbandoned this latter mentality, but those bishops so latinized still hold on to it. Believe me, I know what I am writing, I am an Eastern Catholic priest and also have a Doctorate in Canon Law. I also lived in Rome for a long time so I know what goes on in the Vatican Curia and how officials there think. BTW, I am happy Rome has changed attitude. Ecumenism is the way I think!
