I was wathcing some movie, and the movie made it seem like the romans had many Gods.
So I was wondering if they did and then became Catholic, and if there were other types of Catholics other than Roman Catholic

Yes, the Romans had numerous gods and goddesses that they worshipped.

They certainly all seem to have become Christian within 100 or 150 years of Constantine legalizing Christianity. Those who weren’t had been denied the right to hold government jobs, and denied other rights, and their temples had been torn down or converted (in some cases) into Christian churches. So there wasn’t much incentive to stay pagan.

I don’t know that all Christians would have called themselves Catholic or Roman Catholic, although most were obedient to the Pope. There were heretics such as the Arians who weren’t, of course. There’s a great quote of the time, forget who said it, “Christian is my name, Catholic is my surname”, which probably sums up how most people looked at it.

The legend is that Constantine put a Christian symbol (I believe it was the Chi Rho) on his soldiers’ shields before a battle. They won that battle, and Constantine attributed it to the Christian God, and so he legalized Christianity.

Before this, there were many Roman Gods, yes. Most schools teach about it.

Just look at the names of the planents in our solar system – Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, etc. All of them are named after Roman gods (except Uranus which I believe is greek).

The months include a mixture of Latin Ordinals (September = 7th month, October=8th, November =9th, December =10th), descriptives (March - the month when the Roman campaign started marching for the year, February from februum=purification, April from aprillus - opening), and Roman Gods and Emperors (Janus, Juno, Maia, Augustus, Julius)

The days of our English week are mostly saxon gods: Moon, Tiew, Wotan, Thor, Frigg, (Freya and/or washing), Sun. Freya got replaced by Saturn somehow…

ANd in the latin-derived languages, the days are named for the planets, themselves named for gods.

Moon, Mars, Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, and Sun.

They had the same Gods, but different names for them. I don’t think there is a name for the religion.

Constantin went to a battle, so the beutiful story or legend goes, against the barbarians and he was afraid of them. Suddenly he saw a cross in the sky and the words in latin: “In hoc signo vinces”, “Though this sign, you will win”, and he promised that he would become christian if he won. he won and in 313, he declared the edit of milan freeing the christians for the worship. as my colleague said, in a century th whole europe became christian and whatever name they called themselves.

Christ won over the roman gods and the nice and beautiful roman gods, like Venus and Baccho, disappeared. The christian started taking the stones of the roman temples to built their own houses that surrounded the temples, which was not a christian thing to do, steal temples, no matter how untrutsty they would find. But they had enough stones so they did not do the complete job so that is why we have the roman temples like eaten by a worm. Now everybody wnated to see them complete but…

That was the first victory, political of Jesus.Many more would follow. The last one was the implosion of Communism. not an atomic bomb was thrown, it felt like a sculpture of sand…
