I haven’t been on here for a long time. I always enjoy how civil (for the most part) these threads are for the internet.
This movie has been troubling me. If we make a stand, we draw attention to it. If we don’t, some uniformed people take it as truth. And the attitude against the Catholic Church has been gaining ground in the public square. I have read things in the press from time to time since the first movie that show that some of the fiction has crossed into “fact” in the culture.
Recently I was at a dinner at a friend’s parish and the woman across from me was talking about how her husband had seen a show on TV late at night that said that the church had left out some of the gospels and avoided mentioning that Mary Magdalene was one of the apostles.
She said she was sorry it was on so late, she would have liked to see it. I said they may have been talking about the gnostic gospels which were really written long after the Real gospels and full of heresy. I didn’t get into the fact that the church decided the ones that were included were inspired by God. The next day I was at church and went to the Lighthouse Catholic Media display and found “DaVinci Code Exposed”, by Matthew Arnold. For you who might not have this source in your parish, it consists of CD’s on all different subjects by the likes of Scott Hahn, Fr Mitch Pacwa, Fr. John Corapi, etc. They ask for a $3.00 donation. I got one and gave it to my friend and told her to give it to the lady from the dinner. The best defense we have is correct information passed on through all sorts of media. Support your local Catholic Radio station, EWTN, Cathoiic Leaque, this forum, etc. Even if only a dollar or two when added to others helps keep the word, the truth, where the public can find it. I have used the CD’s as my own little apostolate. I give them to my family and friends because good education portects them from the lies. In turn they can counter the lies in their own circles.

Just a thought.

I can’t believe they even bothered to turn this book into a movie, especially after the Da Vinci code movie was kind of a flop (never saw it, but I understand ticket sales were not great).

The book Angels and Demons was absolute rubbish. As both a Christian and a scientist, I found it at turns ridiculous and offensive. The plot was inane too. It starts off pretty stupid and unbelievable, but even if you accept the plot on its own terms, the last 100 pages or so still take a big left turn into the sublimely ridiculous.

Agree, except DaVinci Code made a bundle worldwide; that’s why the sequel
Angels and Demons has been made. Howard took a lot of criticism but laughed all the way to the bank.

Wow, lots of hate for Angels and Demons. It’s a terrific book IMO, even better than Davinci. Controversial maybe, but that does not take away from how well-written and suspenseful it is. The movie on the otherhand, that truly is horrible.
😛

When The Da Vinci Code came out, I was one of the people who were outraged. I now regret it. The movie really was mediocre at best, and it had less than favorable reviews from top critics. And yet the controversy is what caused Ron Howard rake in the money. It fueled curiosity, and ticket sales.

This is why I’m not saying much about his new movie. Ron Howard has to answer to God in the next life, but for now, he has to answer to the box office. He’s not getting one peep of publicity out of me.
I’ve seen both movies and they were both awful - not just because of inaccuracies, but because of poor writing and a convoluted plot. This latest has received fairly poor reviews and did not take in much money, I think. I hope it bombs and I don’t see how it can possibly succeed

You are right about the hoopla earning him money. The film itself was very bad.

I was raised as a Protestant and we were taught that the Catholics didn’t even use the right Bible and that they had added books to it. In fact, it’s the Protestants/Lutherans who removed them. Imagine my surprise to be sitting in my RCIA classes and reading from ‘books’ in the Bible. I even commented that these weren’t books in the Bible. Of course, they were. I couldn’t wait to tell my sister, and she had no idea that Protestants had removed books.

I hope this movie bombs, my son was changing channels the other day and while he was we saw two movie reviews say how bad the movie was. I am so sick of all the anti catholic garbage out there, it is another clear attack on the church. People who don’t know better will think this nonsense is fact, that is what really bothers me!

Angels and Demons is not a bomb but has made over $156 Million since its release May 15th.

Like the Da Vince Code, a great deal of the money is from foreign theaters. It cost $150 million to make and looks like it is going to be a great box office success only this time we have no protests and no brochures in our church bulletins so many are walking away believing this garbage which really hurts the faith.

True, but look on the bright side, only a small portion of that money is from the U.S.: $46 million as opposed to the $77 million Da Vinci Code made in its first week. I’m going to wager that this movie is not going to do nearly as well for two reasons: Star Trek and Terminator Salvation. Even with Star Trek in its second week, A&D barely did better. It will likely be smothered and forgotten between these two huge movies that are part of much more successful, popular franchises. A movie’s worst enemy is not critics, but its competition. I have seen perfectly wonderful movies flounder at the box office simply because more popular or more heavily publicized movies took over the box office.

So my recommendation: go see Star Trek a second (or third) time. (Awesome movie!) And also be prepared to answer questions from people who did fall for the lies in Angels & Demons.

I heard this movie was boring, so I think Howard will have to do more to defend it.

It was the same way with the Da Vinci Code. Only 217 million was made in the US but the foreign sales were $540 million and that is even worse as these foreign countries like the UK don’t have the means to do a whole lot to dispel the story put forth by Dan Brown.

Many of the churches in the US put Da Vinci Code fliers in their weekly bulletins for church goers which helped a great deal to squash the misinformation.

Dan Brown will write another book.:mad:

Ronnie Howard has become nothing more than a leftist jerk with an agenda. I think that he is a very good director, but his intense hatred for Christianity should shine through, and fool no one. Dan Brown is a charlatan in the same league as Madoff. He's learned that you can make loads of money if you compromise your soul. :( Rob
