It’s rather old school Catholic to still be arguing the war between body and spirit. There is no war between body and spirit. You declare something God created was not good. We are a whole person, a magical, spirit filled body with senses and a mind. No more gloriously gifted creature exists as far as we know, though I am sure the universe is teeming with life. As I said, it’s time to move on. This kind of obsession starts to rise to the pathological.

i guess St. Paul is out to lunch too…magical??? sounds superstitous to me.the flesh is of this world is not saying it is not good,using your logic then it is alright for one to let themsleves be guided by the senses of the flesh.

Only one thing: Why do you seem to imply (uninentionally, i am sure) that this problem is only one that MEN struggle with? I’ve been celibate for a long time & it doesn’t really get any easier… In fact, for me it, in some ways, it kind of gets harder… Not harder as in i am weaker… cause i am not… but just, well,

I can’t explain waht i mean… For once i am at a loss for words… except to say that i wish i had someone to hold at night… (someone perfect, of course )

I am in college and i live on campus with a roommate. I accidentally walked in on him while he was masturbating (well he realized i was coming and stopped, but it was obvious).

Do you all think i should say anything to him?

So you reject the idea that we happen to listen to the corporal work of mercy that tells us to admonish the sinner? I’m not saying to crucify this dude, but it could definitely be brought up in a respectful manner and possibly do some good. And quite frankly, what do I care if other Christian denominations don’t agree with me on this topic? And it is not whether or not “some view this act as sinful” it is a matter that it IS sinful.

I know what you meant when you said to worry about the important stuff like wars and all that, and I also know that I meant that we cannot expect people who live immoral person lives to have moral public lives. Think about it, it really does make sense. I’m not saying that the Church needs to go on a crusade to make sure that the people aren’t masturbating, what I am saying is that it should not be viewed as a taboo topic. It should be viewed and dealt with just like any other sinful behavior and it should be denounced as well as making an effort to help people who struggle with this sin, not just tell them that it is bad.

The “sad” part about the confessionals being filled with boys confessing masturbation is not the fact that they are all there confessing their sins, the “sad” part is that it is so common place that all the younger guys are participating in it. And if he taught that at my seminary he would have to do a pretty darn good job of making sure that he wasn’t sounding like he was saying that masturbation is normal/acceptable or the students(including myself) here would have a heyday with him because this would show an obvious lack of a sense of what chaste celibacy truly is. That said, I will give him the benefit of the doubt and assume that he was not saying that masturbation is ok, he was just making a neutral comment.

Go back and read what I wrote, I never even came close to saying that the sexual revolution started masturbation. I mean that it is sad that because of these relaxed opinions on sexual ethics, a thing like masturbation is seen as normal and possibly even not sinful.

It’s also asking for trouble. I printed up one article about the class president of the group below me in high school (something about him taunting the police in drag, holding a fish, and repeating ‘humuhumunukuupuaa’).

It didn’t go over so well either with the person in question or with the administration. So I’d have to advise against that particular course of action.

Certainly. Sending fake emails to folks have proven to be both funny and a good way to ruin a person. A nice catholic response. Bravo. (remember the girl who committed suicide from an adult’s funny fake email?) good grief, this is sophomoric. Maturity requires a simple, its none of anyone’s business.

SpiritMeadow- how can you call this an obsession over a roommate’s masturbation? He was simply asking if there is an appropriate action to take, because he was concerned for his roommate’s soul.

As a Catholic what is our obligation to try and protect others from sin? If someone was stealing, would it not be our place to at least tell them that this is wrong? If a women is considering an abortion, should we not tell them that there is a life within them and that ending that life would be a grave sin? Why in some situations can we help our fellow man by telling them the truth when it comes to sin but not in others?

Masturbation is a gravely disordered sin that can separate us from God. Yes, it would be awkward to talk about, but is the greater goal of helping others to not sin more important? Why do you (SpiritMeadow) see the OP’s question as a disordered obsession? When the OP is only trying to do what is right?

Oh lighten up please. This was spoken in humor. The advise you are flinging around here with relative moralism is gravely disordered and un-Catholic. It is so typical of the liberal conditon to not see the profound hypocrisy in itself. My advise - get some some serious counseling and stop promoting your own opinions as if they are authorative.
