There has been a lot of back and forth as to whether or not rosaries should be worn as a necklace, but nothing I have seen regarding the common practice of having them hanging from the rearview mirror. For the record, I don’t see a problem with either practice as long as the intention is right, and I don’t make assumptions regarding a person’s intentions for doing so. At least a few saints have worn the rosary beads as a necklace, and religious brothers/sisters wear them openly hanging near their waist. However, people who are vehemently opposed to anyone wearing a rosary as a necklace don’t ever seem to mention them dangling from the rearview mirror in the vehicles of most Catholics. I would think that the necklace use would be less offensive, but I don’t have a problem with either. I think that having sacramental in the car is a good reminder to oneself and potentially other Catholics, and may even spark an opportunity for evangelism. I feel the same way about the necklace idea. I wear mine around my neck because I want to always have it, it would break in my already overloaded pockets, and I want it close to my heart. I wear it under my shirt mainly because so many Catholics are offended if you wear it at all, but especially if it is outside of one’s clothing and thus visible. I’m asking because my friend and I are new to the church and I would like to get him a rosary for his car. I just don’t want to offend anyone’s sensibilities. Personally, from the discussions here and the arguments between my friends and family who are Catholic about this subject over the years, it seems to me that Catholics can sometimes worry too much about what other Catholics are doing since I don’t think that it is something which causes even a venial sin (except maybe something caused by pride, but that isn’t for someone else to judge without being asked.) Nonetheless; “if by eating meat you should cause a brother to stumble…” So, I would like opinions on the proper display, if any, of the rosary. I should note that I have even noted them in the cars of priests and most people at my parish, including the local head of the Knights of Columbus.

I think the only complaint about wearing them is if they get mistaken for jewelry. Basically do not wear one because you think it makes you look more pious or even just looks fashionable. Only wear it for the reasons you have previously mentioned.

Same thing then would apply to vehicles: if you are trying to show off then don’t do it, but otherwise go right ahead. It is often interesting to count how many cars have them when driving around the city. There are more than one realizes…

I think it’s fine to hang rosary beads from your rear view mirror. It’s a great reminder to pray. The Catholic bookstore in my city even sells some in a smaller size especially for this purpose.

I’ve always had one on the rearview mirror along with my blessed palm.

I see you are also in Cali. Just a FYI, the Cali. motor vehicle code says it is against
the law in Cali. to hang anything from your rear view mirror.

cause to pull you over and look for other things…

I’m really curious, which saints wore rosaries?

Thank you. Anything dangling from the mirror that moves while you are driving, is a visual distraction. Maybe it will never cause a problem, but I don’t care whether you have dice, Rosaries, baby shoes, or lingerie. It’s adding risk to driving. Maybe it is a small risk, but it is measurable.

I read somewhere, I wish that I could remember where, about Saint Kateri Tekakwitha wearing the rosary, and I have read about other saints doing so, but I don’t remember whom.

Thank you everyone for your fair opinions on this question. I know that some people have strong opinions one way or the other about wearing a rosary, and I really appreciate the fairness of your answers.

The legality of things hanging from the mirror doesn’t even approach what the question is, nonetheless it is good information for anyone who didn’t know. A bit off topic, but offered in a good spirit. I don’t personally think that it is distracting in most cases, but that is all a different discussion. Thank you for posting the information for anyone who might come across the thread.

I’d still be interested in other opinions regarding the spiritual and respectful aspects of using a rosary in such a manner. God bless.

It’s not off-topic at all. I would say it’s quite important to state that hanging junk from your mirror in a moving motor vehicle is dangerous. Doing dangerous stunts like this is the opposite of piety. It says, “I don’t care about my welfare or that of my passengers or fellow motorists, I’d like to flaunt my Catholicism to everyone who can see.”

I frequently get rides from friends as I do not own a car. And I prefer to ride with friends who respect my safety. Those who don’t jabber on the phone while swerving around the highway. Those who don’t sip from an open cup of coffee with one hand on the wheel. And those who aren’t stupid enough to hang things from their mirror because it’s an egregious and avoidable hazard.

You are pro-life, right? Well then act like you respect your own life and that of your passengers. Banish those hazards from your car while you are driving it, and you won’t get pulled over and ticketed.

  1. Yes, it is off topic. I created the thread to ask about it in regards to respect for the rosary. I believe I know what my own question was about well enough to say when the thread is going off topic. Nonetheless, I expressed gratitude for the information being posted and assumed only the best intentions from the poster.
  2. The rosary isn’t “junk” and intention (ie; your comment about flaunting one’s Catholicism) was covered in the original post. The safety of hanging something from the mirror is another topic. If you or another person wishes to start a thread on the safety and/or legality of hanging anything from a rearview mirror, I would probably be happy to participate.
I gather that your opinion is that displaying the rosary openly is always wrong and you see it as flaunting it. I disagree. I try not to assume the intentions of others in such cases, and if I do assume something about their intentions I try to assume the best. As I said in the original post, it seems that sometimes we spend too much time and effort judging, assuming and criticizing other Catholics over things like wearing or displaying the rosary. Anyway, thank you for your opinion. I will note that some people see it as flaunting and ego based.

You assume best intentions from the poster, to cover the fact that you think intentions are more important than substance? What does it matter my intention, if I raise a safety issue with what you are promoting? I guess that is consistent with saying if the intentions are good, then the safety issue is irrelevant. :whacky:

Out of respect for the Rosary, I suggest you don’t use it in such a way as to possibly bring harm to those who did not participate in your decision to do so.

You are the one claiming it’s ok to hang stuff, so if you just want to hear others agree with you then just say so up front and we’ll all be on the same page. Why should anybody start a new thread if that’s what you’re looking for?

If you’ll notice I wrote nothing about your ego in my first reply, or made any assumptions about your motives. If you want to do it and you want someone to tell you it’s ok, then go for it because now some have.

So just ignore dissenters and go do it but don’t come back and try to justify what you do just because the potential for increased risk does not speak directly to your motives. It speaks to the reality of hanging a Rosary from a mirror, which is what I thought your thread was about. Specifically about in a car as opposed to wearing it like a head band or around the neck.

OK so back to the topic of how Catholic it is, pretending it was not a risk. Let’s start with whether it’s a good idea to wear your religion as a brand name:

Matt 23:4
"All their works are performed to be seen. They widen their phylacteries and lengthen their tassels. "

In other words, they made it very clear to anybody who saw them, that they were in fact people of God. Why do you suppose Jesus had a problem with it? Do you think Jesus was ashamed of the Scriptures they were promoting?

So it may seem “very Catholic” to you, to display your religion, so I invite you to compare your idea with what is Catholic, with what Jesus is saying here.

Or how about the fact you are willing to risk safety as if it were unrelated to your desire to show your religion? If you had asked about pasting pro-life bumper stickers across the windshield, I would have called out the same problem. It’s about your placing the importance of a religious symbol above safety; i.e. symbolism over substance.

Matt 23:19
You blind ones, which is greater, the gift, or the altar that makes the gift sacred?

If you had asked about pasting pro-life bumper stickers on the windshield, I would have pointed out the same problem. It’s about your placing the importance of a religious symbol above safety. Do you deny there is any increased risk at all, by doing so? If not, then you are indeed placing symbolism over substance.

If you had asked me whether it was morally ok to exchange text messages about Jesus, I’d say most certainly UNLESS it is while driving a car. And that would be on topic, wouldn’t you think?

Note for the record, that I believe Jesus would be more in the camp of keeping a lower profile. That said, it isn’t about displaying the Rosary. It’s about saying it’s OK to display it even if it could hurt people. Two completely different concepts.

And again in verse 27
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You are like whitewashed tombs, which appear beautiful on the outside, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and every kind of filth."

I am NOT claiming this applies to you, but it does apply to the OP question. Risk harm, so that others know that I Am Catholic. If the shoe doesn’t fit, don’t wear it. But don’t say the shoe is defective and refuse to try it on, or you’re just asking for affirmation not discussion. If you don’t want to hear the answer to your questions, then don’t ask them. Just go do what you want to do.

Hmmm… I’ve got a few little things missing in the car the kids have hidden a little too well. If they can find them, all the better. I’ll hold the trash bag while they search which they can fill in the process-unless out-of-state french fries are illegal in CA they aren’t finding anything in our car of interest. No officer I don’t need anything in the bad back… 😛

Are any of them the kind of things they may ask dogs to help find? 😃

Watch now they will find one of those McDonald’s Happy Meal Minions and it will swear at the officer. 😃

Parents complain “Happy Meal” toy says swear words

A few comments have been removed due to a complete lack of charity.

Keep the thread on topic and keep the rudeness out of it, please.

… So, I would like opinions on the proper display, if any, of the rosary. I should note that I have even noted them in the cars of priests and most people at my parish, including the local head of the Knights of Columbus.
Likewise, in my parish almost everyone has a rosary on the rearview mirror. I made a soft yarn, crocheted rosary that doesn’t swing or make noise. It’s our emergency rosary, for prayer.

That’s a neat idea! I’d love to see a picture of it. I’ve seen the simple string ones in the mission gift shop (my parish is in one of California’s historic missions) is your yarn one something like that?

I have sometimes kept a rosary in my car, along with blessed palms. I like keeping blessed objects in my car; when you think about it, with accidents such a leading cause of death, cars can be a deadly place. It makes me feel better to have them there. The only thing I could see wrong with having a rosary hanging from your rearview mirror is if it occludes your view (but you would presumably control that from happening).

That was really my only concern, too. It may be a very small risk, but why take that risk? You may be able to “get good at” driving with it there, but I doubt that makes it as safe as if it’s not there. I may be totally wrong.
