I asked this question in the middle of another thread about indulgencies, but I think there it was easily overlooked.

So :

Is it true that a rosary said inside a Catholic church building or chapel also gives a full indulgence for a soul?
Would it be redundant/superfluous to do another, more complex plenary indulgence for a person we have already said a rosary in church for after they died?

Never have heard of this.
I don’t think there are many “shortcuts” if you know what I mean.
🙂

To the second part of your question:
It is always most efficacious to have a Mass said for the living. Prayers after death are good of course, but if you really care for someone, have a Mass said for them while they are living.

To gain the plenary indulgence you must recite five decades of the rosary continuously, whilst meditating on the approved mysteries, whilst using a pair of blessed beads. And if it is being said publicly the mysteries must be announced aloud. Furthermore you must make a sacramental confessiion, communion and pray for the pope’s intentions. And you must also be free from all attachment to sin, even venial sin. So yes it is absolutely true. 🙂 It’s just very difficult to achieve!

It wouldn’t be superfluous to perform another good act to obtain a plenary indulgence for one’s self or a soul in purgatory because of the simple fact that we don’t know if we’ve obtained the indulgence or not. What if there’s a lingering attachment to that sin we committed yesterday? Did we truly make a sincere effort to meditate? At the end of the day, all we can really do is try our best and trust in God. But if you can, then it’d be a very good thing to perform another good work. Have all your bases covered, as it were!

I second the above opinion to have a Mass offered for a particular soul. That is always the best means of assisting them. But nor should we neglect our rosaries!

Hm, and I had gotten so attached to saying rosaries IN CHURCH for them whenever I heard somebody I had personally known, or a loved one of somebody I talked to) had died… Of course that can’t hurt in any case, but I thought I had read somewhere that that would free them from purgatory. Maybe I had wrong information? Maybe somebody here knows?

I beg of you do not under any circumstances cease from praying your rosary in church for their poor souls! They are in desperate need of your prayers! And it most certainly can free their souls from Purgatory. 🙂 You just have to put a little work into it. I’ll say my own rosary tomorrow for the souls you’ve been praying for.

Ohhhhhhh I think I know where I went wrong. 😊

I found a website that may have been one I had seen (or a similar one) themostholyrosary.com/indulgences.htm

One thing I may have “overread” because I was not very familiar with the whole concept of indulgencies, was “under the usual conditions”.

😉

No worries (except that it had led to many scruples in th epast, for a while me beating myself up when I didn’t pray the rosary IN CHURCH)… God I am sure has seen my good will and anyway what really counts is OUR LOVE.

(exaggerated scrupulosity is not good anyway)

Well on most days I say my rosary on my way to town while I walk, it is just the exact time for it.
But for example a few days ago a lady told me that her sister had died (I think it was her sister) and on that day I went to say a second one in church, even though it was a bit of a rushed one because I was a bit under stress, getting my working done and also wanting to go to mass. But I managed to finish it just before the mass started :).

I do not ever want to start feeliung scrupulous about these things again, that can ebcome a bit stress and then it is not done out of love anymore, which is not good.

And thank you so much OS for intending to pray for the souls I have prayed for. Sometimes when I prayed in church and had nobody specific to pray for i just said, for whoever needs it the most, or soemthing like that.

I am sure God knows what to do with those prayers.
(Because He knows EVERYTHING).
