I learned yesterday that my mother is dying of a very serious cancer. She probably has very little time left. I live 2000 miles away and cannot be with her continuously through her illness.

My first impulse, following my grief and tears, was to send her my personal rosary for her to have until I can be with her in person.

What do you think of this? Part of me feels that it might be a comfort to her, and part of me fears she will believe I have given up on hope for a cure for her.

What do you think? Would it comfort you or trouble you to receive your daughter’s rosary at such a time?

I think that is a wonderful gesture! ❤️

Dear Elizabeth42,
I agree with Sr Sally. Sending your rosary to your mother may bring out feelings of comfort and possibly hope. Many people feel, me included, that all things are possible with prayer - she may feel the same way. I will keep her (and you) in my prayers.
Yours in Christ,
Maggie

I bought a rosary bracelet when I was in Conyers. The last time I saw my youngest brother, I slipped it off my wrist and onto his. I don’t think he said a word. His eyes said it all.
When you send the rosary, enclose a card “until we see each other again.”
When my brother was buried, the rosary he held had been his wife’s. I understand that his wife, whose funeral I had been unable to attend, had held his rosary.

I think, as the posts of previous members express, elizabeth42, that it is a beautiful gesture. I also think that Our Blessed Mother would be happy to ensure that it’s all comfort and consolation - no trouble.

I’ll keep you and your mother in my prayers.

God bless you both. 🙂

I also think it is a wonderful and beautiful gesture. It broke my heart to hear your situation. You and your mom are in my prayers. 🙂

I sent the Rosary today to my mother. Her time is very short. She has inoperable pancreatic cancer.

Here is the note I enclosed with the Rosary:

Dearest Mother,

Enclosed is a special Rosary, made from garnets, my birthstone. It has been my own personal Rosary for some time. I obtained it many months ago with you in mind, for what purpose I did not then know. To my sorrow, the time has come to send it to you. Know that when you handle it my prayers and love and thoughts are with you always.

I am praying to the Mother of God daily for you.

Keep it with you always, especially when undergoing medical procedures or suffering doubt or fear or pain.

May it bring you comfort when all else fails.

Your loving daughter

Elizabeth,
The Rosary is a lovely prayer. At times I pray the Lutheran Rosary. The change in this are, “Lord Jesus Christ Son of God have mercy on me a sinner.” This replaces ,“Holy Mary Mother of God pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death.”
The reason being, Mary is not omnipresent, she can’t hear all the prayers directed to her.

God bless,
jean

I am sorry, I find this very offensive. I am a Catholic, my mother is a Catholic, and we believe that Mary does hear our prayers and intercedes for us with her Son Jesus.

This is a Catholic forum. If you are a Lutheran, please post on a forum of those who share your beliefs instead of here. Your attempt to undermine my beliefs at a time of great grief in my life is most unwelcome.

I also saw this (the post you quoted) as an attempt to hijack this thread. There are other threads where differences in belief may be discussed.
A man will only pick up the rosary if guided by the Holy Spirit. There is great comfort in knowing that my father died with his rosary in his hand.

offensive is an understatement. So is inconsiderate, ill-considered and absolutely disrespectful considering that you are dealing with the imminent loss of your dear mother. I apologize for jean–she (or he) will one day understand and repent of his/her heresy and of the cruelty of her/his remarks to you.

Be assured of everyone’s prayers to Our Lady, Queen of Heaven and Help of Sinners for you, your mom, and especially for jean.

Really? You know this, how? Go over to the apologetics forum (the appropriate place for it) and tell us how you aquired this God-like knowledge.

The power of one Hail Mary - even if it isn’t fervently said, is much more than we tend to think. The Secret of The Rosary , by St. Louis de Montfort can be read online. It really is edifying to read. It reveals some of the strength in the roots to our devotion to our Blessed Mother.

There’s a short excerpt below; …can be read in its entirety at this link:
rosary-center.org/secret.htm

"…
The holy and learned Jesuit, Father Suarez, was so deeply aware of the value of the Angelic Salutation that he said that he would gladly give all his learning for the price of one Hail Mary that had been said properly.
Blessed Alan de la Roche said: “Let everyone who loves you, oh most holy Mary, listen to this and drink it
Whenever I say
Hail Mary
The court of heaven rejoices
And the earth
Is lost in wonderment.
And I despise the world
And my heart is brim-full
Of the love of God
When I say
Hail Mary;
All my fears
Wilt and die
And my passions are quelled
If I say
Hail Mary;
Devotion grows
Within me
And sorrow for sin
Awakens
When I say
Hail Mary.
Hope is made strong
In my breast
And the dew of consolation
Falls on my soul
More and more-
Because I say
Hail Mary.
And my spirit
Rejoices
And sorrow fades away
When I say
Hail Mary . . . .
For the sweetness of this blessed salutation is so great that there are no words to explain it adequately, and even when its wonders have been sung, we still find it so full of mystery and so profound that its depths can never be plumbed. It has but few words but is exceeding rich in mystery; it is sweeter than honey and more precious than gold. We should often meditate upon it in our hearts and have it ever upon our lips so as to say it devoutly again and again.”
Blessed Alan says that **a nun who had always had a great devotion to the Holy Rosary appeared after death to one of her sisters in religion and said to her: “If I were allowed to go back into my body, to have the chance of saying just one single Hail Mary - even if I said it quickly and without great fervor - I would gladly go through the sufferings that I had during my last illness all over again, in order to gain the merit of this prayer.” (Blessed Alan de la Roche, De Dignitate Psalterii, Chapter LXIX) This is all the more compelling because she had been bedridden and had suffered agonizing pains for several years before she died. **Michael de Lisle, Bishop of Salubre, who was a disciple and co-worker of Blessed Alan’s in the re-establishment of the Holy Rosary said that the Angelic Salutation is the remedy for all ills that we suffer as long as we say it devoutly in honor of Our Lady.

…"

I’ll be praying for you and your mother at Mass today elizabeth42, and I’ll make sure to say three Hail Mary’s for you later (the way our mothers taught us to say them). 🙂

God bless you and those dear to you.

(* St. Louis de Montfort also said, in his book True Devotion to Mary, that “… with one sigh”, Our Blessed Mother can, " mobilize all the forces of Heaven.") 🙂

It is so true what you say about the Holy Spirit! A rosary is just an incomprhensible piece of “jewelry” to someone who has not been led by the power of the Holy Spirit to understand its profound power and grace.

Such a wonderful and generous gift Our Lady gave to us in the Rosay, if only we have eyes to see and ears to hear Her call.

I am very sad to hear of your mothers illness.

I can speak only for myself, but I personally would find such a gesture comforting beyond words and would cherish it deeply.

I wish you and yours peace in these trying times and will pray for your mother.

Elizabeth–Did you find a new rosary for yourself to use, at least until you see your mother again? Don’t forget the Chaplet of Divine Mercy at 3pm and if you need to stand vigil.
I haven’t prayed The Rosary of the Hours yet. I printed it off the internet several months ago. Each mystery of the rosary is given its own hour with meditation.
After the Fatima prayer, I add the one used by the Marian Movement of Priests: Come Holy Spirit, Come by means of the powerful intercession of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, your well beloved spouse.
